Academic Year 2020-2021

We are ready to help you with your research and learning, no matter where you are studying. Many of our resources and services continue to be available during this time of remote learning, including access to electronic books and journal articles, research support from our librarians, and electronic course reserves. The Library does not have a date when we will be able to open for general student study. Once approved, we will offer reserved seating in a limited section of the Library, in compliance with all county and campus health guidelines. See more FAQs here.

Accessing Materials

Online Books & Articles

You can find millions of articles and electronic books through UC Library Search and the HathiTrust Digital Library’s Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS). As an undergraduate student at UCSB, you have access to nearly all materials in the vast University of California library system.

Course Reserves

Log into the Course Reserves system with your NetID and Password to access digital reading materials that your professors have selected and made available for your classes.

Pickup & Mailing Service

Login to UC Library Search to request Library collections (books, comics, movies, journals) that you can pick up at the Library or have mailed to your home.

Remote Access to Library Databases

You can access our many subscription research databases from off-campus using either the proxy server or the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Research Help

Chat with a Librarian

Our librarians are available to help you with your research needs. There are many ways you can ask a librarian for help, including our 24/7 chat service, email, and virtual consultations.

Research Guides

Librarians have curated these guides with recommended resources for getting started with research in your subject areas.

Book Returns

Returning Books

Book drops at the West Paseo entrance and Music Library are open for returns.

If you cannot return your Library materials to the book returns on campus, you can mail them back or send them via a courier such as UPS or Federal Express, to the following address:

Services Desk / UCSB Library
525 University Center Rd.
University of California, Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara, CA 93106-9010

Be sure to include a prominent note with the books (or on the ILL book straps, if ILL material): "Please check in."

Outdoor Study Space

Take advantage of Santa Barbara’s beautiful weather. Gather your study materials and sprawl out on the Library lawn, where you can enjoy improved wi-fi service and outdoor seating.

Indoor Study Space

A portion of the first two floors of the main Library is open for limited student study space. Users need to provide a UCSB Access Card to enter the building via the Mountain Entrance. Seat reservations for open study space are no longer required for UCSB affiliates.

You get 200 free prints a quarter with GauchoPrint. When the building reopens, you’ll be able to send a print job from your device or a Library computer to printers in the Library.
