Sloan Grant Keeps UC OSPO Network Building Toward Long-Term Sustainability

A new $484,455 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation will support the next phase of the University of California Open Source Program Office (OSPO) Network as they work to make OSPOs a permanent part of the UC system. With this new funding, the UC Santa Barbara Library’s Open Source Program (OSP) will continue to develop and deploy initiatives that raise awareness and support for open source software and hardware at UCSB.

Thoreau Edition Publishes Final Volume of Henry David Thoreau’s Correspondence

He is popularly known as the patron saint of the environmental movement, the father of nonviolent resistance and the famously secluded hermit of Walden Pond. But the myth of Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) – often conveyed by inspirational quotes on coffee mugs, T-shirts and refrigerator magnets – misses the complex, highly social and fiercely engaged man behind the legend.

The Golden Age of Italian Recording

Thanks to generous support from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, UC Santa Barbara Library recently completed a project to digitize portions of its historical sound recording collection of recordings made by Columbia Records in Italy between 1923 and 1950. During this golden age of Italian recording, Columbia created approximately 15,000 Italian sound recordings, including opera, popular, jazz, ethnic and film music recordings.

New grant supports creation of UC network of open source program offices

The University of California has been awarded a grant by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to support the development of a UC-wide network of Open Source Program Offices (OSPOs). This award leverages the work of the Open Source Program Office at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) and funds a collaboration of UC campuses at Berkeley, Davis, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and San Diego with UCSC to promote open source research, teaching, and public service. 

Latin GRAMMY Grant Will Help Preserve Astor Piazzolla Materials

The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation announced last week that UCSB Library won one of two of its Preservation Grants to preserve and make more accessible documents and materials related to the life and career of Astor Piazzolla, a popular Argentine composer of tango and Latin American music.

The Astor Piazzolla Materials are part of the Library’s Edouard Pecourt Collection, housed in the Performing Arts Collection of UCSB Library’s Special Research Collections.
