The Luis J. Rodriguez Papers are now open for research in UCSB Library's Department of Special Research Collections. First acquired in 2019 and expanded through two recent additions, the collection documents the life, literary works, and social advocacy of the renowned American author, poet, mentor, musician, artist, and Chicano activist.  

Generations of researchers who rely on primary sources faced a frustrating hurdle. Conducting original historical research typically required traveling to distant archives, navigating cost-prohibitive interlibrary loans or adjusting a project’s scope based on access to sources. For students engaged in a senior honors thesis or a graduate seminar, these logistical barriers frequently stifled academic curiosity before research even began. As a result, scholarship was often limited to those with the resources to access specific geographic locations or well-funded departments.

Special Research Collections has acquired a collection of letters from famed author James Baldwin, as well as ephemera related to the Civil Rights Movement. Both collections—which are now open for research—highlight social justice organizing activities during the height of civil unrest in America.
