Lending libraries determine the length of the loan periods for all items borrowed through ILL. Loan periods for ILL items borrowed from outside the UC system vary greatly. Items borrowed from within the UC system typically loan for three months, with the option to renew up to three times.

Lending libraries also determine whether an item may be renewed, and will stipulate any further restrictions on the use of material.  For example, a lending library may stipulate that a rare item not be photocopied, or that an item must only be used in the UCSB Special Collections Department for Library Use Only.

Additionally, lending libraries reserve the right to recall ILL items at any time regardless of the originally assigned due date. Recalls are most often issued because a patron at the lending library has requested the item for personal use or to be put on Course Reserve. Recalled items should be returned to the UCSB Library as soon as possible. If you still need to use an item that has been recalled, you may place a new request for the same item and we'll do our best to borrow a copy from another library as quickly as possible. If possible, please try to return your recalled item before placing a new request to avoid any delays in processing.
