Eligibility

Applicants must be United States citizens, permanent residents, Green card holders, or hold existing work study authorization with the legal right to work in the U.S. They must be engaged in graduate-level, post-doctoral, academic or independent research. 

The purpose of this opportunity is to promote research visits from outside scholars and thus UCSB students, faculty, and emeriti are not eligible.

Application Requirements

Applications must include:

  • Narrative statement (three page maximum), which includes: 
    • title of research project; 
    • outline of research topic and specific collections to be accessed at UCSB Library Special Research Collection. Applicants must select collection(s) from Online Archive of California;
    • dates to be spent in residence; 
    • names of recommenders; 
    • and the applicant’s contact information
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty or other scholars familiar with the research project. 

Please note that the committee cannot consider letters of recommendation from librarians or staff of the UCSB Library.

Application Instructions and Deadline

Application materials for the Karmiole Fellowship, including letters of recommendation, must be submitted in PDF format by email to library-special@ucsb.edu. Letters of recommendation may be sent by the persons writing them or by the applicant.

Please be sure to indicate that application materials are to be considered for the 2024 Kenneth Karmiole Endowed Research Fellowship. The research residency for the next round of the fellowship can last up to three months between March 15 and December 15, 2024.

The application period for the 2024 fellowship opportunity is closed. The 2025 opportunity will likely open November 2024.

Review Process and Notification

Review Process: A committee will evaluate the research proposals based on their merit and demonstrated need to access, in person, the holdings of UCSB Library Special Research Collections. Preference will be given to proposals that illustrate the greatest potential to produce research products such as dissertations, monographs, articles, performances, exhibitions, etc.

Notification: Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by email on or before March 1, 2024.
