Anna Harper is a Librarian in the Teaching & Learning Department of UCSB Library. She holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Denver, and a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies with concentrations in Studio Art and Art History from Portland State University. Anna’s approach to librarianship is grounded in her creative practice. She is interested in design thinking as it can be applied to library instruction, with special attention paid to the ideation process. She has contributed to research on visual literacy that was published in College & Research Libraries, the Electronic Library journal, and presented at the Art Libraries Society of North America annual conference. She has developed formal partnerships with students to include their creative work in support of library initiatives, served as advisor to a student art collective, and helped coordinate a professional learning community that built the curriculum for a graduate certificate in Makerspace education. She has presented nationally on her work leading independent studies for undergraduate film and art history students, integrating Wikipedia editing into undergraduate art history research, and collaborating on assignments that center special collections. More recently, she has been iterating on a curriculum focused on technological developments, new media, and critical thinking skills.

Anna’s work at UCSB Library supports foundational information literacy with first-year, first-generation students through instruction, digital learning objects, research consultations, and outreach to campus stakeholders. View the Teaching & Learning Department research guides
