The Catalyst Printshop: RELICS – A New World Rises
This exhibition features a custom built LEGO® printshop and the UCSB Story Printer. Visitors are invited to engage with the display by taking a magazine or printing a short story or poem to take with them.
The project is set in a world long abandoned by humanity and exhausted of its resources. In this future, the creative arts have been outlawed by a ruling totalitarian group known as the ILLITERATI. The Catalyst, UCSB’s literary arts magazine, created this printshop as a way to fight against the encroaching darkness and ensure that creativity does not die.
This project was inspired by the international exhibition RELICS: A New World Rises, created by 2020 Australian LEGO® Masters winners Jackson Harvey and Alex Towler. The Catalyst Printshop was designed and built by Ashley Evans ’25 alongside The Catalyst Editorial Team 2024-25. The UCSB Story Printer was designed and built by Catalyst student Sanjit Masanam ’27.
This exhibition is co-sponsored by UCSB Library and the Department of English.
