UCSB Reads 2020 Sneak Peek!

This summer, read along with the UCSB Reads Committee as they work to select the UCSB Reads 2020 book.

The UCSB Reads Committee has announced the five titles that make up the short list for 2020 consideration. The selections are (in no particular order):

1. "The Fifth Season" by N.K. Jemisin
2. "The Overstory: A Novel" by Richard Powers
3. "Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore" by Elizabeth Rush
4. "The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable" by Amitav Ghosh

Girl, Illustrated. Thi Bui, artist behind 2019 UCSB Reads Pick, comes to campus.

What Thi Bui first set out to do was to turn a graduate school oral history project into something more accessible outside academia. Safe to say: she succeeded wildly.

That oral history became the basis for “The Best We Could Do,” Bui’s illustrated memoir documenting her family’s escape from Vietnam in the 1970s and the difficulties they faced building new lives in America. It received widespread critical and popular acclaim, winning a 2018 American Book Award, named a finalist for 2017 National Book Critics Circle and Eisner awards and landing on a host of “Best Of” lists.

Nominate a Book for UCSB Reads 2018

Even though we're still anticipating UCSB Reads 2017 author Luis Urrea’s talk on April 24 in Campbell Hall, it is not too early to start thinking about a book for UCSB Reads 2018.

The advisory committee will start to convene in late spring and throughout the summer to select next year's book, and we invite you to participate in the selection process. UCSB Reads is an annual program that brings the campus and community together to discuss important issues of our time while reading the same book.

UCSB Reads ‘Into the Beautiful North’

The UC Santa Barbara Library has chosen “Into the Beautiful North” as its 2017 UCSB Reads selection. An annual event now in its 11th year, UCSB Reads engages the campus and the Santa Barbara community in conversations about key topics while reading the same book. UCSB Reads is presented by the UCSB Library, in partnership with the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor. The event culminates in a public talk by Urrea on April 24 in UCSB’s Campbell Hall.
