Along with the UC Santa Barbara Library, Professor Harry Reese – of the Department of Art and the College of Creative Studies – and book artist Gunnar Kaldewey presented “Made in Germany,” recent artist books from five contemporary fine arts presses from Germany in an exhibit in Special Collections, 3rd floor, UCSB Library in Winter 2009.
These artists/presses – who also showed their recent work at the Codex Foundation Book Fair at UC Berkeley from February 9-11, 2009 – visited UC Santa Barbara, for a panel discussion and reception for the exhibition on February 13. The artists in the exhibition included Françoise Despalles and Johannes Strugalla (Despalles Editions – Mainz & Paris), Clemens-Tobias Lange (CTL Presse – Hamburg), Till Verclas (Un Anno Un Libro – Hamburg), Sabine Golde (Carivari – Leipzig), and Frauke Otto (Hochschule für Kunst und Design, Burg Giebichenstein Halle). On February 13, from 4:00-5:30 pm at the 8th floor of the UCSB Library, there was an informal panel discussion with five contemporary book artists from Germany. Artist books from these artists – Sabine Golde, Till Verclas, Clemens-Tobias Lange, Johannes Strugalla, Françoise Despalles – in addition to work from the book artist Frauke Otto, was on display in Special Collections (3rd floor, UCSB Library) from February 13 - April 10. Professor Harry Reese of the Department of Art and the College of Creative Studies organized the exhibit and moderated the discussion. An opening reception for the exhibit and guests immediately followed the panel discussion, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm, on the library’s 3rd floor.
The exhibit and presentation are supported by the Department of Art, the College of Creative Studies, the Department of English, the Department of German, Slavic and Semitic Studies, the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center, the Art Research Initiative, the UC Santa Barbara Libraries, the Codex Foundation, and the UC Santa Barbara Research Focus Group on “The History of Books and Material Texts.”
