Join us at UCSB Library for a free zine workshop, no experience necessary! Participants will learn how to make a zine exploring themes in the UCSB Reads 2023 book “Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design” by Charles Montgomery.

Zines (pronounced “zeens”) are self-published, DIY collections of images and text that are printed by hand or photocopied, and independently distributed by the author or ‘zinester.’  Zines are generally made out of a desire to share information rather than for profit. You can learn more about zines and how they are made here.

If you want to start thinking about the zine you’ll create, here are some prompts to consider in creating your zine:
  • Consider a place in your community or one you have visited that makes you happy. What are the physical characteristics of this place? Is it easy for people who live in the community to visit this place?
  • Conversely, consider a place that makes you unhappy. What are the physical characteristics of this place?
  • What would you like to see changed in your community/neighborhood/city?
  • If you had to create a recipe for a happy city, which ingredients would you put on the recipe list?
Completed zines will be displayed in UCSB Library during Spring Quarter 2023.

UCSB Reads is an annual “one book” common reading program led by UCSB Library.

Author Charles Montgomery will give a free public lecture at 7:30pm on May 10 in Campbell Hall.
