Erin Smith is the Subject Librarian for Music and Collection Strategist for the Fine and Performing Arts areas at UCSB. She holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) where she specialized in popular music. After teaching courses in music history and research at CWRU and the Cleveland Institute of Music, she became CWRU’s Research & Engagement Librarian for the Humanities and then the Instruction & Outreach Librarian at that institution. Her previous academic work focused on both musicology and music performance, with Master’s degrees in Musicology and Vocal Performance from Northwestern University and a Master’s degree in Collaborative Piano from Western Washington University where she specialized in early music and 20th- and 21st-century repertoires. Publications include articles on Led Zeppelin and Florence + the Machine in the flagship journal Popular Music as well as publications on library topics including popular culture within academic libraries from zines to graphic novels as well as work on research strategies for early career researchers and instructional strategies for information literacy-oriented courses. Erin also enjoys teaching about internet communities from a sociological and digital humanities perspective. Her most recent research includes presenting and writing on the intersection of gender and fandom communities ranging from early internet bulletin boards to modern social media interactions and advocating for digital preservation of such communities’ materials.  

Erin’s work at UCSB includes developing library collections materials, hosting instruction sessions on both information literacy and research in relation to music, and providing research assistance for students, faculty, and staff.
