Using the VPN for Accessing the Library Databases

The campus VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is an alternative to using the proxy server. This method of authentication will require you to download the VPN client software and install it on your computer.

Once you have downloaded, installed and configured the client, you can log into the VPN and you will be given a UCSB IP address for the duration of your VPN session. You can then open a web browser and use the web-based database interfaces.

The VPN will also provide authentication for databases which require proprietary software to use. These software packages will not work with the proxy server. Examples include SciFinder Scholar, databases which use the Insight Client software, and EndNote searching using connection files.

Set-up Instructions:

Download the client software. Be sure to follow all the instructions for installation. Leave the client in "full-tunnel" mode, which is the default setting. Otherwise, it will not work with the library databases.

Each time you want to do research:

  1. Open your VPN client software.
  2. Click on "connect" and log in using your UCSBnetID and password.
  3. Leaving your VPN session open, open your browser or search software (such SciFinder Scholar, Insight, or EndNote).
  4. You should be authenticated and ready to do your research.
