Employment Procedures

Librarian Positions

Librarian positions are academic appointments and require a Masters in Library Science degree (MLS). When vacancies occur, they are posted on the University Librarian Vacancy and the Librarian Vacancies pages. These vacancies and other academic positions are advertised in a number of publications, including The Chronicle of Higher Education, American Libraries , and College and Research Library News. Application procedures are outlined in the advertisements. Applications are accepted only for specifically advertised vacancies.

Staff Positions

Staff positions are recruited through the UCSB Human Resources Employment Office. Library staff vacancies, along with all other campus staff vacancies, are announced daily through the UCSB Online Application and Classification Information System (OACIS). Applications are accepted only for specifically advertised vacancies.

Student Assistant Positions

Student Assistant positions are part-time (less than 20 hours/week) positions. Only currently enrolled UC students may apply for these positions--students who have graduated or otherwise withdrawn from school are not eligible.

Applications are accepted throughout the year. Submitting a new application to the pool each quarter provides us with your current work schedule availability. As vacancies occur, the supervisors for those positions review the current quarter pool and contact applicants for interviews.

Student Assistant application forms can be printed from a pdf file or picked up at the Library Human Resources Office. Completed applications should be turned in at this location, which can be found on the 3rd floor of the Davidson Library outside room 3593P.
