Special Collections has completed processing the papers of William Dole (1917-1983) an American abstract collage artist and former Professor of Art at UC Santa Barbara. Dole was born in Angola Indiana in 1917 and studied English at Olivet College and later art at Mills College in Oakland. He was appointed an Assistant Professor of Art at UCSB in 1949 and later became department Chair in 1958. In the late 1950s collage became his primary medium and he exhibited widely from the 1950s up to his death in 1983. His works are widely held by museums around the country.
His papers include a catalog of his work, exhibition catalogs, correspondence, gallery records, slides and photographs, teaching files, and press clippings. The collection also includes a large amount of material related to his art-making process, including books and papers from around the world he cut up and used as source material for his collages. Finally, the collection includes many Dole prints: lithographs, monoprints, and test prints. A Guide to the collection may be found in the Online Archive of California.
