After completing a project to digitize its archive of aerial surveys, the Santa Barbara Flood Control District donated the materials to MIL. The Flood Control District is responsible for maintaining floodplains, creeks and other waterways that capture our rare, but strong, stormwater surges.
The archive consists of approximately 10,000 images of Santa Barbara County over the last 50 years, and complements MIL's already extensive holdings of local aerial imagery. The District also provided digital copies of the imagery, which provides a huge cost savings to the library. Aerial photography is available for free to all UCSB students and researchers. A fee charged to community users helps to maintain and build the collection and subsidizes continuing services for academic research.
