On May 28, the Library celebrated the six students who received the second annual UCSB Library Award for Undergraduate Research (LAUR), which recognizes students who produce a scholarly or creative work that makes expert and sophisticated use of the collections, resources, and services of the UCSB Library.

The first-ever UCSB Library Award for Undergraduate Research (LAUR) was established in 2019 as a means of celebrating and honoring those students who engaged with the Library and made expert use of our vast collections and services.  

Join the University Librarian, Kristin Antelman, for an exploration of how the Library can better serve students on their mobile devices. We’re looking for 20 students to join us for free pizza and a focus group conversation on the topic of “Library+Phone.”

The UCSB Library team was busy during the summer preparing for the start of the academic year. Here’s a summary of what’s changed. 

For undergraduate scholars and researchers, the UC Santa Barbara Library plays a key role in their academic success. Every day — and in countless ways — students tap into the library’s vast resources and services.

“Our undergrads conduct legitimate research and are in every way functioning as young scholars,” said Jane Faulkner, a student success librarian. “What better way to honor and recognize this than to have the library award them with a prize for their efforts?”

Use Google to search for “D.A.R.E.” (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), and the top 10 results include the organization’s official website, but also the video for the Gorrilaz song “DARE.”

Use Web of Science, an online subscription database available to UCSB students via the UCSB Library’s website, and you get a list of scholarly articles and studies about the drug-prevention program.

The photograph, in rotation on her computer, is part of an exhibition, “Helmets of the First World War: Battle, Technology, and Culture,” on display in UCSB Library’s Mountain Gallery through June 30.

In honor of UCSB’s Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Month, UCSB Library has pledged to spread RAKs throughout the Library. From February 13-24, we will post clues on the Library’s Facebook and Instagram accounts about the locations of 100 “midterm relief” goody bags. If you find one, share a picture on social media, then pay it forward with a RAK of your own!

The UC Santa Barbara Library has chosen “Into the Beautiful North” as its 2017 UCSB Reads selection. An annual event now in its 11th year, UCSB Reads engages the campus and the Santa Barbara community in conversations about key topics while reading the same book. UCSB Reads is presented by the UCSB Library, in partnership with the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor. The event culminates in a public talk by Urrea on April 24 in UCSB’s Campbell Hall.
