For ten years, UCSB Reads---a program of the UCSB Library--has been bringing the UCSB and Santa Barbara communities together to discuss important issues of our time while reading a common book. For the first time ths year, the selection committee, comprised of UCSB students, faculty, staff, and community partners, has chosen a work of fiction. The UCSB Reads 2017 book is Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. The acclaimed novel tells the story of 19-year old Nayeli, who works at a taco shop in a Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the U.S. to find work. Inspired by The Magnificent Seven, she heads north to recruit seven men to protect her hometown from bandidos. Into the Beautiful North engages personal stories to raise questions about immigration, return migration, and border crossings. This panel discussion will explore the scientific and humanistic arguments for reading works of fiction like Into the Beautiful North. With UCSB faculty Ken Kosik (Neuroscience), Sameer Pandya (Asian American Studies), and Kay Young (English). Moderated by Enda Duffy (English).
