This presentation focuses on innovative pedagogy that facilitates connections between first year college writers and their academic, social, and political communities by engaging with artifacts from campus archives and commemorative sites. Presenters will share a series of research and writing activities that invite students to see themselves as members of their community and as participants in its history and memory making.

Melissa Barthelemy (Ph.D. candidate, Public History) will speak on how her research into commemorative practices relating to the May 2014 tragedy in Isla Vista models for students what participant research is and how they can better understand the process through which professors, archivists and librarians collaborate on research ventures.

Kathy Patterson (Lecturer, Writing Program) will speak to the ways in which this project has resulted in transfer and engagement that extends beyond the classroom to the choices students make about how they engage in their community as scholars and as participants who share in and contribute to its institutional (or collective) memory.

Cookies and drinks will be provided.
