14 Black Classicists focuses on the lives of fourteen African-American men and women who made groundbreaking achievements in education and the field of Classics at the end of the Civil War. Each taught Greek or Latin at the college or university level and their academic accomplishments paved the way for future generations of African-Americans entering universities. The UC Santa Barbara Library’s presentation of 14 Black Classicists includes a selection of portraits of these important scholars. This exhibition, which is made possible through the generosity of the Argyropoulos endowment in Hellenic Studies, is jointly mounted with the UCSB Art, Design & Architecture Museum, where the balance of portraits may be viewed along with a book by one of the scholars and a selection of Greek antiquities from the Museum’s collection.

On Wednesday, April 19 at 4pm, John W.I. Lee (History) will offer a talk in conjunction with the exhibition: "Let us go upon the Acropolis": John Wesley Gilbert in Greece, September 1890-April 1891" (UCSB Library, Instruction & Training Room 1312).
