Web Weavers: Integrating Web Instruction into Library Skills Classes

The credit-bearing library skills course (INT 1) taught by librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has evolved over the years as online systems have proliferated. Each new system has been added and taught in separate sections of the weekly class.

The Library Instructional Services Committee (LISC) undertook the revision of INT 1 in the Fall of 1995. With access to the Web made available to students via campus and library computers, LISC members restructured the class to integrate the Web into the individual sections rather than teach it as a separate resource. The course was redesigned to make use of the Web to access the online catalogs, as well as to compare and contrast information found on the Web to that found via other means, e.g., the online catalogs.

This poster session will illustrate how the Web has been integrated into the course through sample assignment questions and PowerPoint-developed handouts.
