ISO: International Organization for Standardization (in French)
- The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a
worldwide federation
of national standards bodies from some 100 countries, one from each
country. The mission of
ISO is to promote the development of standardization and related
activities in the world.
- Japanese
Industrial Standards Committee
- JIS covers industrial and mineral products with the exception of
medicines, agricultural chemicals, chemical fertilizers, silk yarn, foodstuffs and agricultural and forest products designated under the Law Concerning Standardization and Proper Labelling of Agricultural and Forestry Products. JIS may be classified by their nature into three categories; product standards, working method standards, and basic standards. Roughly speaking there are some 4,000 product standards, 1,600 working method standards, and 2,800 basic standards.

- EDItEUR,
the Pan-European Book Sector EDI Group
- EDItEUR, the Pan-European Book Sector EDI Group, was set up following
a meeting
held inFrankfurt in October 1991. More than 50 publishers, booksellers
and librarians
from 10 countries agreed on the need for international collaboration on
the development
and promotion of EDIFACT-based standards for electronic communication in
the European book sector.

Commission on Illumination
- As its name implies, the International Commission on Illumination -
abbreviated
as CIE from its French title CommissionInternationale de l'Eclairage - is
an organization
devoted to international cooperation and exchange of information among
its member
countries on all matters relating to the science and art of lighting.
- International Electrotechnical Commission
- "The object of the Commission is to promote international co-operation on all questions of standardization and related mattersin the fields of electrical and electronic engineering and thus to promote international understanding." (Statutes - Art. 2) The site has a searchable database of standards, and standards may be ordered online.
- International
Federation for Information Processing
- Web server for the International Federation for Information
Processing, which is a multinational federation of professional and technical organizations (or national groupings of such organizations) concerned with information processing.
- International Multimedia
Teleconferencing Consortium
- The IMTC is a non-profit corporation founded to promote the creation
and adoption of international standards for multipoint document and video
teleconferencing. The IMTC and its members promote a Standards First initiative to
guarantee interworking for all aspects of multimedia teleconferencing. The organization
is open to all who support its goals.
- International
Telecommunications
Union
- Web server for ITU, a world-wide organization within which
governments
and the private sector coordinate the establishment and operation of
telecommunication
networks and services; it is responsible for the regulation,
standardization,
coordination and development of international telecommunications as well
as the
harmonization of national policies. The ITU is an agency of the United
Nations.
- Standards
in Museum Informatics
- The Museum Informatics Project promotes a standards-based approach to
museum computing on the Berkeley campus and works with campus units, other
institutions, organizations, companies, and individuals to influence and guide the direction and development of international standards for museum informatics.
- Z39.50 Maintenance Agency
- This division of the U.S. Library of Congress provides information pertaining to the development and maintenance of Z39.50 (existing as
well as future versions) and the implementation and use of the ANSI/NISO Z39.50 protocol.

- American National Standards
Institute (ANSI)
- The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private
non-profit membership organization that coordinates the U.S. voluntary standards system. Among the features of this site are: the ANSI Reference
Library, containing various publications and forms that ANSI uses in electronic form and NSSN a site with searchable indexes to national and international standards and ordering information.
- American Petroleum Institute
- The American Petroleum Institute, among its many activities, develops standards for the petroleum industry. Among the features of this site is Infoport, a searchable database of API publications (including standards) with online ordering capability.
- American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and
Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)
- Through its membership, ASHRAE writes standards that set uniform methods of testing
and rating equipment and establish accepted practices for the HVAC&R industry worldwide,
such as the design of energy efficient buildings.
- American Society for Testing and
Materials (ASTM)

- The Defense Standardization Program (DSP)
- Featuring information about Military Specifications and Standards
reform, including Acquisition Practices Directorate and the Office of the Deputy Under-Secretary of Defense for Industrial Affairs & Installations, Defense Standards Improvement Council, and the Standardization Library.
- National Institute
of Standards and Technology (NIST)
- An agency under the U. S. Department of Commerce, NIST's explicit
mission is to promote U.S. economic growth byworking with industry to
develop and apply technology,measurements, and standards.
- Society for Automotive Engineers
- SAE develops standards for both ground vehicles and aircraft. The site includes a searchable database of SAE standards with online ordering.
- Underwriters Laboratories
(UL)
- UL is the leading third-party certification organization in the
United States and the largest in North America. As a
not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization, UL
has been evaluating products in the interest of
public safety since 1894. UL's activities involve evaluating more than
16,500 different types of products for safety hazards, developing
standards to test products,
and registering the quality systems of organizations worldwide to various
quality standards. This site gives information on how to order UL standards.

Industry
Systems Advisory Committee (BISAC)
- In addition to its EDI formats, BISAC has developed hard copy formats
for
Packing Slips, Returns Notifications and Royalty Statements. They have
been the
voice of the U.S. in the international standardization of bar coding for
book
covers and jackets and developed the Machine-Readable Coding Guidelines
For the
U.S. Book Industry.
- National Committee for Information
Technology Standards
- From 1961- 1996, NCITS operated under the name Accredited Standards Committee X3,
Information Technology.
- Data Interchange Standards
Association - EDI Standards
- The Data Interchange Standards Association, Inc. (DISA) was formed in
1987 to be the secretariat for Accredited StandardsCommittee (ASC) X12 .
Chartere by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1979, ASC X12 is made up of volunteers who develop and maintain standards for the use of electronic data interchange (EDI). DISA staff manage ASC X12membership, balloting, standards development and maintenance, publications, ASC X12 meetings, and provide liaison services with ANSI and other standards-setting bodies on behalf of ASC X12.

to current may be accessed from a UCSB domain through INSPEC in the California Digital Library.

Way
- The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) was chartered by the U.S.
Defense
Advanced Research ProjectAgency (DARPA) to provide near-term solutions to
technical
difficulties in Internet operations and to develop near-term enhancements
for the
Internet.
- Library of Congress Standards
- This page links to information on standards maintained by the Library of Congress, including the MARC format for bibliographic records, the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) and the Encoded Archival Description DTD, as well as information on Z39.50 and the standards holdings of the Library of Congress.
- National Information Standards
Organization
- National Information Standards Organization (NISO) web server.
- Serials
Industry Systems Advisory Committee (SISAC)
- SISAC is the acronym for the Serials Industry Systems Advisory
Committee.
The Committee provides a forum for the serials industry to discuss and
resolve
mutual concerns and to develop standardized formats for the electronic
transmittal
of serials information. SISAC is the only known electronic serials
standards organization
in the United States which encompasses the entire spectrum of the serials
chain -
- from publisher to librarian.
