Viola: A Resource and Information Guide

Note: This is a guide to selected resources on the viola available in the Music Library at UCSB. The Music Library is located in the Arts Library, second floor. To access electronic items with the UCSB! icon from off-campus, you must be affiliated with UCSB (student, faculty, or staff), and you will need to use the library's proxy server or VPN service.

M CLASS NUMBERS

Scores are shelved under M, alphabetically by composer within each class number. The most important numbers to remember for finding scores of viola music are M47 (solo unaccompanied), M226 (viola and piano music) and M1015 (concertos, piano reduction). Browse the scores shelved under these class numbers to get an idea of the library's holdings. Remember, though: many scores may be checked out. Always check in Pegasus, the UCSB library catalog, to determine the library's complete holdings of viola music.

To browse by M, ML, or MT Class number in Pegasus, select the Advanced Search tab at the top. From one of the "Field to search" pulldown menus, select Call Number (LC). In the corresponding search box, enter the LC class number you wish to search:

PEGASUS

A general guide to searching for music in Pegasus is available.

Basic keyword searching can be effective for finding viola music in Pegasus. To search for recordings, add and recording to your search, and to search for scores, add not recording. Examples:

Basic Search of Full Catalog

Keyword sonatas viola and hindemith not recording [to find scores of Hindemith's viola sonatas]
Keyword concertos viola and penderecki and recording [to find recordings of Penderecki's viola concerto]

You can also search effectively in Advanced Search (select from the tab at the top). Examples:

You can also use Command Line Search to find viola music in Pegasus. Select the Command Line Search link from the Advanced Search screen. To find scores, always add and wtp=score to your search, and to find recordings, add and wtp=recording. (Note: the code wtp indicates material type.)

The following search examples all use Library of Congress subject headings (sub and wsu codes) plus the wtp code to find string chamber music, and the wpu code to search by publisher. Scores retrieved from these searches are mostly, though not exclusively, located on the shelves in the M classes indicated. For recordings, ask at the Music Service Desk (MSD).

To access Melvyl, the library catalog of the ten combined UC campuses, go to the home page of the UCSB Libraries. Melvyl has records for over 23 million items, which you can search by title, journal title, author (including composer or performer), subject, and general keywords. To combine search terms, select the Advanced option:

The latest issue of the Journal of the American Viola Society and Strad is shelved on the current periodicals display shelves, visible to your right as you enter the music library. UCSB students may check out periodicals for one day, except for the latest issue, which does not circulate.

To search for journal articles on the viola, use the three databases listed below. All three can be accessed via the library's home page > Research > Article Indexes & Databases.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature UCSB!
RILM indexes not just journal articles, but all types of music literature: books, dissertations, conference proceedings, reviews, etc. Coverage goes back to 1967. To get started, select contains phrase from the first menu and search on viola music. Use the Publication Year box to limit your results chronologically. Note that you can also limit by language.

International Index to Music Periodicals--Full Text (IIMP)UCSB!
IIMP indexes hundreds of music periodicals, including The Strad, Strings, American String Teacher, and Journal of the American Viola Society. The database also contains the fulltext for Strings and American String Teacher (see above for coverage).

Music Index OnlineUCSB!
Indexes more than 640 music periodicals going back to 1976, including Journal of the American Viola Society (indexed 1988-), The Strad (indexed 1976-), Strings (indexed 1987-), and American String Teacher (indexed 1977-).
