Music Searching in PEGASUS

Arts Library, UCSB

Basic Search | Advanced Search | Search Hints | Command Search

Pegasus is UCSB's online library catalog. A general guide for searching Pegasus is available.

BASIC SEARCH

In Basic Search, you can do general keyword searching, or keyword searching for author, title, or subject. You can also search for an exact title, author, or subject. On the Pegasus screen, see Search Hints and Example(s) for each search type. Keyword searching can be a good place to begin when you want information on a topic. You can use and or or to combine terms in your search. To find music, you can combine composer and title. One quick way to limit your search to retrieve only recordings is to add the words and recording. Examples:

Keyword: celtic music history
Keyword: (celtic or irish) and music and history
Keyword: strauss and heldenleben
Keyword: strauss and heldenleben and recording

Use Title begins with... when you know an exact title, and Title Keyword when you know only a few words of a title:

Title begins with... garland encyclopedia of world [omit initial article]
Title Keyword: world music garland [words in any order]

You can use Author searching to find not only authors and composers but also performers and ensembles:

Author (last name first) bartoli cecilia
Author Keyword: cecilia bartoli
Author Keyword: kronos quartet

Use Subject begins with... only when you know an exact Library of Congress (LC) subject heading. Subject Keyword is a keyword search on LC subject headings:

Subject begins with... music ireland history
Subject Keyword: music history ireland

In any keyword search in Basic Search, you can search for a phrase by selecting

Words as Phrase? yes

To search for more than one phrase at once, separate your phrases by and:

Keyword: beethoven and string quartets and budapest string quartet

ADVANCED SEARCH

Select the Advanced Search tab at the top of the Pegasus screen. Advanced Keyword Search allows you to combine different search fields and limit your search to retrieve only scores, recordings, or other formats. Read the search hints at the bottom of the Advanced Keyword Search screen. You can use the Boolean operators and, or, and not both within a search box and between search boxes. To create a phrase in Advanced Keyword Search, you must use !1 between words:

Keyword: beethoven and string !1 quartets
Combine with the next set: AND
Author: guarneri

Scroll down to limit by a single year, by library collection, by format, and/or by language. Notice that options for limiting by format include Music (score or recording), Score, Sound Recording (all types), Compact Disc, LP Recording, 78 RPM Recording, Cylinder, Video, Electronic Resource, etc.:

Author: lotte lehmann
Limit by format: 78 RPM Recording

Title: cambridge opera journal
Limit by format: Electronic resource

Author: john corigliano
Limit by format: Score

SEARCH HINTS

Truncation

In both Basic and Advanced Keyword, add * at the end of a whole or partial term when you are not sure how to spell a name or you want to retrieve word variations. The * can substitute for zero or more letters:

Keyword: lutoslaw* and concerto*

You can also use * within a term when you are not sure how to spell it:

Keyword: art*ur rub*nstein and chopin

Generic titles

To find musical compositions with generic titles (i.e. sonata, symphony, concerto, suite, quartet, etc.), it is often helpful to enter the genre in the plural:

Keyword: dvorak and quintets
Limit by format: Compact Disc

If the work includes a solo instrument, add it as a phrase:

Keyword: dvorak and concertos !1 violoncello
Limit by format: Sound Recording

Opus and thematic index numbers

It is often effective to search using an opus or thematic index number:

Keyword: mozart and 550
Limit by format: Score

COMMAND SEARCH

The command line search option in Pegasus offers enhanced searching flexibility and precision. Select the Advanced Search tab and then the Command Line Search link. To do a command search, you must use index codes with your search terms, as shown in the examples below. Some of the most useful codes are:

aut=author, composer, performer, ensemble wrd=general keyword
ttl=exact title (title begins with...) wtp=format (recording, score, video, etc.)
wti=title keyword wpu=publisher keyword
tut=uniform title* wyr=year of publication
sub=exact subject (LC subject begins with...) wtoc=table of contents keyword

*What are uniform titles and why are they useful for music searching in library catalogs? See Using Uniform Titles.
