IIMP indexes and provides abstracts for several hundred music periodicals from 1996 to the present and for music articles from the New York Times and Washington Post. IIMP also provides partial or full retrospective indexing for over a hundred music publications. Updated monthly. Access is limited to the ucsb.edu domain.

Getting Started

From any InfoStation, select Indexes and Databases. Scroll down and select the International Index to Music Periodicals.

To view a list of periodicals indexed and the dates covered, click on About IIMP in the toolbar, then on Title List.

Searching

At the search screen, type a word or phrase in the All Keywords or Title Keyword box. You can combine words or phrases with and, or, or not, and you can truncate a word or phrase with * to retrieve alternative endings: appalachia* will retrieve Appalachia and Appalachian. Adjacent terms, such as folk music, are searched as a phrase rather than as separate words:

To view a record's full citation, select the hyperlinked text of its brief display, or mark the checkboxes to the left of the records you want and then click the Full Citation button. Both brief and full citations are displayed in reverse chronological order.

Full citations from 1996 to the present, and some from before 1996, include an abstract. In full citations resulting from a keyword search, the search terms are highlighted with a red dot.

Browse Indexes

At the search screen, click on the Browse button to the right of any search field to select search terms for that field. You will be taken to a browse screen. Here, enter a word or phrase in the box at the top and then click on Look for.

[IIMP Browse Index]

You will be taken to the portion of the browse index that most closely matches your term. Select the term you want, then click OK. Your term will be transferred to the corresponding search box on the search screen.

Other Search Indexes

In addition to the All Keywords and Title Keyword fields, you can search IIMP by Author, Subject Categories, Subject Terms, Document Type, Publication, Language, Country of Publication, Date, ISSN, and IIMP number. You can combine two or more fields in one search.

To search by author, enter last name, then first name. It is often helpful to search the browse index first.

For searching by subject in Subject Categories or Subject Terms, use the browse indexes first. Subject Categories are very broad areas like Chamber Music, Folk Music, and Country and Western Music. Subject Terms are more narrowly focused. Note that subject searching is limited to records from 1996 to the present.

Finding Reviews

To find book reviews, enter words from the book's title in the Title Keyword box. Type book review in the Document Type box and submit your search.

[Book Review Search]

To find other types of review (music, performance, film, etc.), enter words from the title in the Title Keyword box, then select the appropriate term from the Document Type browse index. Click OK and submit your search.

To download, insert a floppy disk. Select Save As from the File pulldown menu and save to the a: drive when prompted for a file name.
