- Guide To Reference Books, by Eugene Sheehy. Ref
Z 1035.1 S43 1986
- This is a general annotated bibliography of reference books on
all subjects. Several copies are housed in the Davidson Library
Reference Area, and 1 copy is available in the Arts Library Art
Reference Area. The 1992 supplement is available only in the
Davidson Library.
- Music Reference & Research Materials; An Annotated
Bibliography, by Vincent Duckles & Michael Keller. 5th
ed., rev. Ref ML 113 D83 1997.
- This is the best selective and annotated bibliography of
music reference works and research tools. It is organized by
category, such as "dictionaries & encyclopedias", "histories
and chronologies", "bibliographies of music literature", etc.,
and includes an index of authors, editors, and reviewers; an
index of subjects; and an index of titles. UCSB call numbers
have been pencilled in to the margins next to titles we own
in copy 1 of this bibliography.
- Information On Music: A Handbook Of Reference Sources In
European Languages, by Guy Marco. 1975-
Ref ML113 M23
- Only the first three volumes of this set, originally
projected to be in eight volumes, are available: Basic
& Universal Sources; The Americas; and,
Europe.
- General Bibliography For Music Research, by Keith
Mixter. 2nd ed. Ref ML 113 M5 1975
- This narrative bibliography includes "references to general
bibliographical tools that may be of aid to those engaged in
research in music". The emphasis is on books from North America
& Europe. The compiler attempts to describe what each cited title
includes that would be of direct interest to the music researcher;
and, to list the kinds of related information each could reveal.
- Reference Materials In Ethnomusicology, by Bruno
Nettl. (Detroit Studies in Music Bibliography, 1). Ref ML 128 M8
N4 1967
- A narrative & critical discussion of the leading reference
works in the field. Included is a list of publications cited, with
full bibliographical information. It is outdated, but still the
best tool for identifying & evaluating older sources.
- Annual Bibliography Of European Ethnomusicology.
1966-1975. Ref ML 128 E8 M8
- A series of volumes covering ethnomusicological publications
issued in Europe from 1966 through 1975. It is organized by
country with an index of authors, a geographical-ethnic index, &
an index by field of research included in each volume. A separate
cumulative index to all the published volumes includes authors,
geographical headings, and subjects in a single alphabet.
- An Index To Musical Festschriften & Similar Publications
, by Walter Gerboth. 1969. ML 128 M8 G4
- This work lists and indexes musical Festschriften, which are
compilations of articles, often of a highly scholarly nature,
published to honor an outstanding musical individual upon some
special occasion. The Gerboth Index was published in
1969, so its content pre-dates the coverage provided by RILM
, cited below under Periodical Indexes. In addition, since
the coverage in RILM is incomplete, an in-house index
covering Festschriften owned by UCSB and not indexed by Gerboth,
was produced and is available at the Music Service Desk. Articles
published in Festschriften can be on any and all topics, in any
and all languages.
- A Guide To International Congress Reports In Musicology
1900-1975, by John Tyrrell & Rosemary Wise. 1979. Ref ML
128 M8 T9
- This is a very useful, though old, guide & index of otherwise
difficult to find information. With only the place or date of a
congress, a partial title, or the name of the sponsoring organization,
one can identify the report of congresses held between 1900 & 1975
so that the reader will have enough information to find it in a
library's collection. This tool also provides a subject index of
the papers contained in these congress reports.
- "Current Bibliography" in Ethnomusicology.
Journal Of The Society For Ethnomusicology. 1953- ML 1 E7
- Each issue of Ethnomusicology contains a section
of "current bibliography," which lists books, dissertations, films,
exchange publications, & periodical articles related to the field.
From 1967 on, the lists include discographies. Lists are organized
by geographical areas & occasional topics, e.g., "dance." Special
bibliographies are published as part of the journal on an irregular
basis. This excellent current listing has never been cumulated,
classified & indexed.

- Reader's Guide To Periodical Literature. 1900/04+
Available in the Davidson Library Reference Area. Ref AI3 R4
- This is a general periodical index covering all subjects. It
is the best source available for identifying articles from music
periodicals prior to 1949 when the Music Index was
instituted.
- Music Index. Ref ML118 M8 1949-
- A periodical index for music comparable to the Reader's
Guide To Periodical Literature, this title indexes over 400
music periodicals. Monthly issues are cumulated into annual volumes,
and the Music Library has a run of the Music Index through
1996. IIMP, a new competitor (see below), continues the
coverage found in the Music Index.
- IIMP. International Index to Music Periodicals.
- This product covers periodical listings from January 1996-.
Primarily a citations index, IIMP has the widest coverage
of any journal index. It is available as a cd-rom at the Music Service
Desk and as a web source under INDEXES on the music page.
- RILM Abstracts Of Music Literature. Ref ML 1 I83
1967-1991; and on CD-ROM, titled MUSE. RILM is also
available as a
CDL-hosted database; to access, select RILM Abstracts from
the pulldown menu. Both the CD-ROM and CDL-hosted versions are updated
quarterly.
- RILM indexes "all significant literature on music
that has appeared since 1 January 1967" including books, articles,
essays, reviews, dissertations, Festschriften, iconographies, etc.
RILM is imperfect in that one cannot be sure that all
relevant publications will be included, but the access it provides to
the publications that are included is unique, and the coverage is
broad, extending well beyond periodical literature and, including
an abstract for each listing.
- Ethnomusicology. Journal Of The Society For Ethnomusicology
. 1953- ML 1 E7
- Cumulated 10-year indexes are published as part of this journal.
The index for v.1-10 (1953-66) appears bound with v.10; &
separately bound indexes are shelved with the rest of the journal
for v.11-20 (1967-76) & for v.21-30 (1977-86). The annual index of
each year's articles appears in the third issue of each volume.
- American Musicological Society Index To The Papers,
Bulletin, & Journal 1936-1987. Ref ML 27.45 A634 1990
- "Provides author-title access to all articles, reports,
abstracts, reviews, obituaries, & communications published in the
Papers of the American Musicological Society (1936-41), Bulletin

Europeans of music practices in continents other than Europe. These
are visual & oral observation descriptions made by people before
sound or visual recordings were possible. Material in this collection
was written by non-musicians. "...the overt motivations of their
writers may roughly be classed as those of professional &
proselytising Christians reporting or retailing others' reports, of a
non-professional Christian with nevertheless predominantly Christian
interests, or of travellers seeking information for one of 3 main
purposes: settlement & colonisation, diplomacy with a view to trade,
or exploration &/or exploitation."

Online Sources
- PEGASUS & the MELVYL catalog
- PEGASUS is the UCSB online catalog and lists
over 25,000 LP and CD recordings available for listening in the UCSB
Arts Library. Searching this database by keyword is a productive way
to locate recorded selections when the cataloging entry includes a
table of contents. The MELVYL catalog contains
listings for recordings owned by any of the UC campuses. Although
recordings are normally not available for interlibrary loan, the
cataloging entry for a recording may be more detailed at one campus
than at another, and searching for individual selections in
MELVYL may result in identifying albums
which UCSB owns. See the guides to using PEGASUS
and MELVYL located near each terminal for
instructions, and consult the Music Library staff for individual help.
- RLIN and WorldCat
- RLIN and WorldCat provide two national cataloging databases, each of
which contains a huge number of recordings owned and cataloged by
libraries throughout the country. WorldCat, as it existed
in 1991, is also available at the Music Service Desk in CD-ROM
format. Although the recordings are not available via interlibrary
loan, if any contributing library produced a detailed table of
contents for a needed recording, you may be able to identify the
album or albums which contain the selection you need, then search by
album title in PEGASUS. UCSB may own the album, but
may not have included enough information in the cataloging entry for
you to know that the music you are seeking is on that album. Both RLIN
and WorldCat are
CDL-hosted databases; to access, select RLIN Bibliographical
File or WorldCat from the pulldown menu.
Both the CD-ROM and CDL-hosted versions are updated
quarterly.
