Note: This is a guide to selected resources on the cello available in the Arts Library at UCSB. To
access electronic items with the icon from off-campus, you must be
affiliated with UCSB (student, faculty, or staff), and you must configure your
browser to connect to the library's proxy server.
M, ML, and MT CLASS NUMBERS
In the UCSB Music Library, books and scores are arranged on the shelves according to the
M class numbers of the
Library of Congress Classification System. Scores are shelved under M, books on music under ML, and music
instructional materials such as methods, exercises, and orchestral studies under MT. Within each class number,
scores are shelved alphabetically by composer, books (in most classes) alphabetically by author. For cello
music, the most important numbers to remember are M52 (solo unaccompanied), M231-233 (cello sonatas, suites or variations,
and pieces respectively, all accompanied by piano), and M1017(cello concertos, piano reduction). Browse the scores
shelved under these class numbers to get an idea of the library's holdings--but remember that many items may be checked
out. Always check in Pegasus, the UCSB library catalog,
to determine the library's complete holdings of cello music. To browse M, ML, or MT class numbers in
Pegasus, select the Advanced Search tab at the top.
From one of the "Field to search" pulldown menus, scroll down and select Call Number (LC.) In the corresponding
search box, enter the M, ML, or MT class number you want to search:

PEGASUS
A general
guide to searching for music in
Pegasus is available.
Basic keyword searching can be effective for finding cello music in
Pegasus. To search for recordings,
add and recording to your search, and to search for scores, add not recording.
Examples:
Basic Search of Full Catalog
| Keyword |

[scores of Beethoven's cello sonatas] |
| Keyword |
concertos violoncello and haydn and recording |
[recordings of cello concertos by Haydn] |
| Keyword |

You can also use Command Line Search to find cello music in
Pegasus. Select the Command Line Search link from the
Advanced Search screen. To find scores, add and wtp=score to your search, and to find recordings,
add and wtp=recording. (Note: the code wtp indicates material type.) Examples:
Command Search

[to find a score of Beethoven's cello sonatas] |
| ttl=concertos violoncello and aut=haydn and wtp=recording |

The following examples of command searches all use Library of Congress subject headings (sub and wsu codes)
plus the wtp code to find string chamber music, and the wpu code to search by publisher. Scores retrieved from these searches are mostly,
though not exclusively, located on the shelves in the M classes indicated. For recordings, ask at the
Music Service Desk (MSD).

library. UCSB students may check out periodicals for one day (except for the latest issue, which does not circulate).
To search for journal articles on the cello, use the three databases listed below. All three can be accessed via the
library's home page; point to Research in the column on the left, then
click on Article Indexes & Databases and scroll down
the alphabetical list of databases in the lefthand frame. Because these
databases are licensed for UCSB use only, you need to configure your browser for the library's
