Orchestral Brass: A Resource and Information Guide

M, ML, and MT CLASSES

In the UCSB Music Library, books and scores are arranged on the shelves according to the M class numbers of the Library of Congress Classification System. Scores are shelved under M, books on music under ML, and music instructional materials such as methods, exercises, and orchestral studies under MT. Within each class number, scores are shelved alphabetically by composer, books (in most classes) alphabetically by author.

In the M class, scores for brass instruments are shelved under specific class numbers. Consequently, you can simply browse the shelves under these specific class numbers to get an idea of the library's holdings for brass. But remember that many scores may be checked out at any given time. Always check in Pegasus, the UCSB library catalog, to determine the library's complete holdings of brass music. To browse M, ML, or MT class numbers in Pegasus, select the Advanced Search tab at the top. From one of the Field to search menus, scroll down and select Call Number (LC). In the corresponding search box, enter the M, ML, or MT class number you want to search:

FINDING BOOKS

To find all of the library's works on the horn in both the ML and MT classes, do a Subject Keyword search in Pegasus on horn music instrument, as shown:

To find all of the library's works on the trumpet, trombone, or tuba in both the ML and MT classes, go to Advanced Search, do a Subject search, and limit to Books, as shown (example for trumpet):

FINDING MUSIC

To search for specific musical works in Pegasus, use Advanced Search. Scroll down to the Limit by Format menu to limit to score or recording. If you are searching for a generic work such as a sonata or concerto, use the plural of the genre along with the name of the solo instrument.

To find a score of Beethoven's Horn Sonata in F, op. 17:

To search for duets, trios, quartets, etc., for like brass instruments (i.e. horn duets, trombone trios, etc.), use the following subject headings:

To search for journal articles and other literature on brass instruments, use the three databases listed below. All three can be accessed from the library's home page; point to Research and select Article Indexes & Databases. To access the library's databases from off campus, you must configure your browser to the library's proxy server.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature

RILM indexes not just journal articles, but all types of music literature: books, dissertations, conference proceedings, reviews, etc.

International Index to Music Periodicals, Full Text

The Horn Call is indexed back to 1971 (vol. 1) and includes full text from 1998 on. ITG Journal is indexed back to 1976 (vol. 1), and International Trombone Association Journal back to 1996 (vol. 24).

Music Index Online

Indexes more than 775 music periodicals going back to 1976. The Horn Call is indexed only back to 1994. International Trombone Assocation Journal is indexed back to 1979 (vol. 7), and ITG Journal is indexed for its entire run, back to 1976 (vol. 1).
