Note: This is a guide to selected resources on the bassoon available in the Arts Library at UCSB. To
access electronic items with the icon from off-campus, you must be affiliated with
UCSB (student, faculty, or staff), and you must configure your
browser to connect to the library's proxy server.
M, ML, and MT CLASSES
In the UCSB Music Library, books and scores are arranged on the shelves according to the
M class numbers of the
Library of Congress Classification System. Scores are shelved under M, books on music under ML, and music
instructional materials such as methods, exercises, and orchestral studies under MT. Within each class number,
scores are shelved alphabetically by composer, books (in most classes) alphabetically by author. The most
important numbers to remember for finding bassoon and contrabassoon music are M77 (solo unaccompanied), M254
(solo with keyboard), and M1027 (bassoon concertos, piano reduction). Browse the scores
shelved under these class numbers to get an idea of the library's holdings. Remember, though, that
many scores may be checked out. Always check in Pegasus,
the UCSB library catalog, to determine the library's complete holdings of bassoon music. To browse M, ML, or MT
class numbers in Pegasus, select the Advanced Search tab at the top.
From one of the "Field to search" pulldown menus, scroll down and select Call Number (LC.) In the corresponding
search box, enter the M, ML, or MT class number you want to search:

PERIODICAL LITERATURE
Current and bound issues of The Double Reed, published by the International Double Reed Society (IDRS), are
shelved under ML1 .D68; the latest issue is shelved in the current periodical area visible to your right as you enter
the music library. See also the Journal of the IDRS, ML1 .J63 (merged into The Double Reed in
1999). An author index to these publications up to 1991 is available: ML128 .W5 P76 1991. UCSB students may check out
periodicals for one day (except for current issues, which do not circulate).
You can use the three databases listed below to search for articles on the bassoon. All three can be accessed via the
library's home page; point to Research in the column on the left, then
click on Article Indexes & Databases and scroll down
the alphabetical list of databases in the lefthand frame. Because these
databases are licensed for UCSB use only, you need to configure your browser for the library's
proxy server in order to use them from off campus.
- RILM Abstracts of Music Literature

by year of publication. To limit by language (for example, to retrieve only articles in English), select the
"Change Search & Display Level" button on the right, and then select Advanced search mode and Continue.
The Advanced search screen has a language box where you can limit your search to one or more languages.
