Professional Societies

These are the Web sites for the major materials science and engineering societies. Most have information on their publications, conferences, services, membership and so on.

Commercial Information Providers

  • Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
    Cambridge Scientific Abstracts provides a number of subscriber-only databases and collections of Web-accessible science resources which can be reached through this site, including a number of biochemical databases, the METADEX metals and materials database, and the Ceramic Abstracts/World Ceramics Abstracts file. UCSB users only can access selected Cambridge databases, including the biochemical files and Ceramic Abstracts through our Internet Database Services page.
  • Chemical Abstracts Service
    Chemical Abstracts Service, a division of the American Chemical Society, is the premier provider of current information from the literature of chemistry. This site includes information on CAS's print and electronic products and services, including documentation on STN International (the online service provided by CAS) and its commands and databases. If you have an STN account, you can access a number of STN databases via the STNEasy Web interface or use TELNET to search the full STN command line interface.
  • Derwent, Inc.
    Derwent is the world's leading producer of patent information databases, including the Derwent World Patents Index, and a number of specialty databases. This site includes some brief descriptions of the nature of patents and the patenting process. Derwent also maintains the Patent Explorer site, a Web-based tool for searching and displaying U.S. and European Patent Office patents. Membership is required, and there are fees for displaying patents, but membership is free for now.
  • The Dialog Corporation
    The Dialog Corporation is the world's largest provider of information access, including both traditional online and Web access to the DIALOG and DataStar systems. The site above is the new home site for Dialog, and some of the information at the Web site is still in transition from the old web site, but there are links to the older site where necessary.
  • Engineering Information, Inc.
    Engineering Information, Inc. (Ei) (a subsidiary of Elsevier Science Publishers) is the publisher of Engineering Index and the COMPENDEX database, available free to ucsb.edu users on the Web, as well as a variety of other formats. They are developing Engineering Information Village, a large collection of engineering resources available by subscription over the Internet.
  • Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe
    FIZ Karlsruhe produces several databases and is the German host of STN International)
  • IFI/Plenum Data Corporation
    IFI/Plenum produces a family of U.S. patent databases, including some with sophisticated chemical and polymer indexing.
  • Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)
    ISI is the publisher of Current Contents and Science Citation Index. This site includes a "What's Hot in Research" section, with articles on recent highly-cited research, and citation impact studies of various fields, institutions and researchers.
  • OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc.
    OCLC produces the WorldCat international library catalog and provides access to many other databases through its FirstSearch and EPIC services. These may be accessed by subscribers via TELNET from this site.
  • Questel/Orbit
    Questel/Orbit is an international online information company specializing in patent, trademark, scientific, chemical, business and news information. This web site contains numerous links to other Web information, especially on patents, trademarks and other intellectual property. If you have a current Questel or Orbit account, you can TELNET to search their databases from here.
  • SilverPlatter Information
    SilverPlatter is a major distributor of databases on CD-ROM and over the Internet (by subscription only.)
  • UMI
    Formerly known as University Microfilms, UMI is the primary supplier of copies of dissertations from academic institutions worldwide. UMI's site allows online ordering of dissertations in PDF file, microform or print versions. UMI also provides a number of databases on the Web and on CD-ROM, including their own Dissertation Abstracts, which is currently available on the Web free of charge for 1997-98 dissertations, but requires a subscription to search the full file. DA is also available on CD-ROM and from a variety of online vendors.

  • Academic Press
    Includes browsable and searchable catalogs of books and journals. Chemistry publications are hidden in the "Physics, Engineering, Math and Computers" section.
  • ACS Publications Division
    The American Chemical Society Publications home page includes information on ACS journals, books and software, instructions to authors for ACS journals, "hot articles" from C&E News, and more. UCSB users may use this link to access downloadable supplementary material from recent volumes of ACS journals.
  • American Institute of Physics Press
    Includes a searchable and browsable catalog of AIP books.
  • Annual Reviews, Inc.
    Includes an index of Annual Reviews publications from 1984-present, and is adding full text for its volumes from 1997-present..
  • Association of American University Presses Combined Online Catalog/Bookstore
    Includes a searchable catalog and online ordering.
  • Baltzer Science Publishers
    Includes a browsable list of journals, with ordering information and instructions to authors.
  • Birkhauser Boston
    Birkhauser primarily publishes books and journals in mathematics and life sciences, but has some materials of interest to chemists. Their book catalog is browsable by author, title or subject.
  • Blackwell Science
    Includes a browsable-by-subject list of a portion of their books and journals catalog, with ordering information.
  • Bureau of National Affairs, Inc.
    BNA publishes materials dealing with environmental, health and safety and regulatory issues.
  • Cambridge International Science Publishing
    Publishers in materials chemistry and materials engineering. Not to be confused with the database publishers, the crystallographers, the university press or the software publishers...
  • Chemtec Publishing
    Chemtec is a Canadian publisher of books and journals, mainly dealing with polymer science.
  • CRC Press
    Includes a browsable-by-subject list of current books and other products, with ordering information.
  • CSIRO Publishing
    Australia's major publisher of scientific books and journals, including Australian Journal of Chemistry. Includes a list of current book titles browsable by subject.
  • Elsevier Science
    Includes a browsable and searchable catalog of books and journals, and an Alerting service which includes searchable tables of contents Elsevier Science journals back to January 1995, updated weekly. ToC's appear about six weeks after publication.
  • Gauthier-Villars
    Includes a browsable-by-subject catalog of journals with ordering information. Also available in French.
  • IAPC Nauka
    IAPC Nauka is the principal publisher of journals from the Russian Academy of Sciences in English translation. The site includes browsable tables of contents and abstracts for journals from July, 1997 to present. No electronic full text is yet available.
  • Institute of Physics Publishing
    Includes a browsable list of books and journals, with instructions to authors and ordering information.
  • John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
    Includes searchable and browsable catalogs, instructions to authors and electronic journals and forums.
  • Kluwer Publishing
    Includes a searchable and browsable-by-subject catalog of books and journals.
  • Marcel Dekker
    Includes a browsable and searchable catalog of books and journals.
  • Materials Research Society (MRS) Publications
  • Plenum Publishing
    Includes a searchable and browsable catalog of books and journals. Plenum is a major publisher of Russian journals in translation.
  • Prentice-Hall

  • Royal Society of Chemistry Information Services
    Includes a searchable catalog of RSC books and journals..

    Includes an electronic journal preview service.
