Step 1: Determine which Census report the subject or variable is contained in by determining whether the variable was asked on the 100% or sample Census Questionnaire.

When the 1990 Census was conducted two different questionnaires were were sent out to households: a short form and a long form.  Census data are based on these two different forms and produce two different types of data: 100-percent and sample.

100-percent data are derived from questions asked on the short form. On the short form, seven population questions were asked about each household member and six housing questions were asked about each housing unit.  The questions on the short form also appears on the long form.  The 100-percent data are more precise than sample data.

Use the following tables to determine if you need 100-percent data or sample data.

Questions Asked on the Short Form -- 100-percent Variables
Population Questions: Housing Questions:
Name (not released to the public) Coverage (not tabulated)
Household Relationship Units in Structure

Sample data are derived from questions asked on the the long form.   The long form is distributed to approximately one in every six households.   Sample questions are more numerous and provide more detail to the data user.
