ChemConnect's List of Chemistry Journals Online
If you don't see the journal you're looking for below, try this very comprehensive list of chemistry and biochemistry-related electronic journals, arranged by "complete journals", "journals with some limitations" and "Tables of Contents or abstracts online".. ChemConnect is a provider of Web services to the chemical industry and maintains a directory to chemical suppliers on the Internet (see also that section of this guide.)
Academic Press IDEAL Electronic Library
IDEAL contains electronic versions of 175 journals from Academic Press, with full text available as PDF files (you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to view them.) Note that though most begin coverage in 1996, coverage starting dates do vary. Also, not all journals are equally up-to-date. You can find direct links to Academic's chemistry and biochemistry journals below.
Aldrichimica Acta
Available free of charge, recent issues only; this publication contains review articles on various aspects of organic synthesis. Requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view articles.
American Chemical Society Journals
These electronic versions of the American Chemical Society journals contain the full journal from 1996-present, in browsable and searchable form, with both HTML and Adobe Acrobat PDF versions of the pages, containing all graphics, with links to supporting material. The full text of the following journals is available to Internet subscribers only; print subscribers can obtain recent tables-of contents and recent abstracts; anyone may view the instructions to authors, current tables-of-contents, author indexes and supporting material. Starting in 1998, Web edition subscribers only have access to "Articles ASAP" - the full text of articles ready for publication, some 2-11 weeks before they appear in the printed journals.
The University of California now has a system-wide subscription to the Web editions, so full text is available from any ucsb.edu address.
American Institute of Physics Online Journals Publishing Service
The American Institute of Physics publishes some of the most important journals in physics, and their online publishing program handles the journals of several other scholarly societies. Browsable and searchable tables of contents are available at no charge from 1997-present for most journals. Full text (generally in Adobe Acrobat Reader PDF files) is available to subscribers only. Journals listed below are of interest in chemistry and available in full text (or will be soon) for ucsb.edu users.
American Physical Society
The other major American physics society, publisher of the Physical Review journals. Journals of interest to chemists include:
- Physical Review A: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics
- Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics
- Physical Review E: Statistical Physics, Plasmas, Fluids and Interdiscipinary Topics
- Physical Review Letters
- Physical Review Online Archive (covers all of Physical Review from 1985-96.)
- Reviews of Modern Physics
ASPET Journals Online
The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Theraputics publishes several of its journals online through Highwire Press. The online journals include full text accessible from 1997-present (subscribers only) and searchable and browsable tables of contents back to the mid-sixties.
Annual Reviews, Inc.
Includes an index of Annual Reviews publications from 1984-present, and is adding full text for its volumes from 1997-present. Some of those of interest to biochemists and chemists include:
Australian Journal of Chemistry
This site includes tables of contents for most issues from 1994-present and abstracts in PDF format from 1997-present available to anyone, as well as the full text Web edition from 1998-present available to Web edition subscribers only..
Biochemical Journal
Biochemical Journal is published by Portland Press for the Biochemical Society (Great Britain). Articles are searchable and browsable. Full text is available from 1996-present in either HTML or PDF formats.
Blackwell Science Synergy
Blackwell Science publishes over 200 journals, mostly in biology and medicine. Tables of contents and abstracts are freely available. Users at ucsb.edu addresses have access to full text of articles. Titles of interest to chemists and biochemists include:
Cambridge University Press Journals Online
CUP publishes a wide range of scholarly journals, with a few of interest to chemists and biochemists, including:
Chemistry & Industry
Chemistry & Industry is the international news magazine of chemistry and the chemical industry, published by the Society for Chemical Industry in Britain. This site provides the current issue, including job listings, plus selected archival articles.
Collection of Czechoslovak Chemical Communications
This highly respected journal covering many areas of chemistry now has full text in PDF format available from 1994-present. Issues are very up-to-date. While the full text is not searchable, titles and abstracts are searchable and there is an author index for each volume and browsable tables of contents. Also present: instructions for authors, contact and subscription information. Full text is now available for ucsb.edu users.
EDP Sciences
EDP Sciences is owned by the Société Française de Physique, and publishes electronic journals for a number of major European scientific societies. Journals are browsable and searchable (abstracts). Full text is available for subscribers as Adobe Acrobat PDF files. Some of the EDP Sciences journals of interest to chemists are listed below:

This is a subscriber only service, available to ucsb.edu users; enter using the "group log-in" option. The list of journals may be browsed alphabetically or by subject.
