BOOKS AND ARTICLES |
| |
Most individual works of art do not have entire books written about them. Try searching Pegasus by the artist’s name for a book on his/her works, or use other information about the work to broaden your search to find books (on, for example, the time period or century, region or culture, medium, movement, subject, and/or institution housing the work) that might discuss the work.
EXAMPLES:
Title | Ophelia |
| Artist | John Everett Millais |
| Period | 19th century |
| Region | England, Europe |
| Medium | Painting |
| Movement | Pre-Raphaelitism |
Subject | Shakespeare in art; Women in art |
| Location | Tate Gallery, London |
| |
Title | Great Buddha of Kamakura (a.k.a. Daibutsu or Amida Buddha) |
| Artist | |
| Period | Kamakura |
| Region | Japan, Asia |
| Medium | Sculpture |
| Movement | |
Subject | Amitabha; Buddhist gods in art; Pure Land Buddhism |
| Location | Kotokuin |
|
Alternatively, search for an article on the specific artwork, since articles tend to be more focused on narrower topics than books.

AUCTION AND SALES INDEXES |
| |
Arts Library staff cannot provide appraisals or endorse commercial appraisal services, but researchers may consult auction and sales indexes in the Art Reference Green section to estimate the approximate monetary value of works of art.
To find auction catalogs, search SCIPIO for the UCSB Libraries' holdings.
The most recent five years of Sotheby's and Christie's are housed at the end of the Art Exhibition Catalog collection; earlier catalogs are stored off-site and may be requested by filling out the annex request form. Knoedler retrospective sales catalogs are available on microfiche in the Art Reference Room.
More information about auction and sales indexes can be found at New York Public Library Research Guide: Auction Sales Indexes.
