Dramatic Arts Internet Resources


Department of Dramatic Art

The Dramatic Art and Division of Dance department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees including a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Master of Arts, and a Doctor of Philosophy in the study of dramatic literature and history as well as studio courses and participation in the production program.

Theatre UCSB
In a typical year, the department produces five main stage drama productions and two modern dance concerts. The productions represent the various periods and styles taught in the academic programs, ranging from the classics to contemporary dramas and comedies to an occasional musical. Additionally, the department offers graduate and undergraduate directed one-act plays, an original scripts workshop and dance studio presentations. DIGITAL LIBRARIAN: PERFORMING ARTS
Includes links to national and international performing arts resources.
JUSTIN'S DRAMA & THEATRE LINKS
Comprehensive and annotated Website created by Austalian high school drama teacher, Justin Cash. Includes list of sites related to the business, art, and education of theater. Theatre updates, bulletins, and show schedules are also included.
INTER-PLAY
An online index to printed plays in collections, anthologies and periodicals.
INTERNET BROADWAY DATABASE
States to be the "official database for Broadway theatre information." Site includes production materials dating back to the beginning of New York theatre to present. Materials include cast and crew listings, statistics, and facts.
McCOY'S GUIDE TO THEATRE AND PERFORMANCE STUDIES
An online guide that has been available since 1993 and is reguarly updated. A brief description to each link is included in this concise and organized list of useful Web sites.
MUSICALS101.COM
A Web site dedicated to the making and history of musicals-- includes reviews, essays, biographical information, and photos.
NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY: THEATRE RESOURCES ON THE NET
A list of internet resources involving different aspects of the performing arts field.
THEATREUSA.COM
Designed to provide resources for creative writing, stage production, and theatre listings. Includes list of Pulitzer Prize Winners and weekly Web site picks. TheatreUSA also produces a free electronic newsletter.
THEATRICOPIA
A large site with an abundance of links to musical theatre web pages for shows, performers, composers, discographies, etc.

BONE YARD EFFECTS
Great site for visual images of creative makeup designs; company is located in Los Angeles.
COSTUME IMAGEBASE
An index to selected images used in the study of fashion and costume.
THE COSTUME PAGE
Features costuming sites for live theater and film, Also includes an index of costume and costuming related links for those who study or design costumes.
HISTORY OF COSTUME INDEX
This site is based on the German publication, "Zur Geschichte der Kostume" printed in Munich from 1861 to 1880. This is a good source for researching fashion during the Victorian era and includes both formal and folk dress.
INTERNATIONAL THEATRE DESIGN ARCHIVE
Online archive that includes notes, images, and Website of scene, costume, and lighting designs from particular productions and artists. "Venture of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology whose mission is to actively promote the advancement of knowledge and skills in all aspects of design and production in the performing arts." A good resource for its visual content, although links are not regularly updated.
STAGE CRAFT ONLINE
This is an excellent example of a web site for a commercial company that specializes in set design. Stage Craft is a fabrication and production company for touring sets and stages with service shops in Carson City, Nevada and Nashville.
THEATRON
A company that specializes in the "field of virtual reality and multimedia for cultural heritage clients." Presentations are interactive and include the expertise of educators, scientists, and artists. Subject matters consist of 3D computer resconstructions of ancient and historic theatre structures such as, Theatre of Dionysus and Theatre of Pompeii.

THEATER PERFORMANCES AND FESTIVALS

BAY AREA PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL
Two-week reading of works from new American playwrights. The festival is sponsored by the Playwrights Foundation and "searches out new talent, cultivates relationships with emerging and established playwrights, and matches selected playwrights with directors, dramaturges, and visual artists"
CALIFORNIA SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
A schedule of productions for the current season and how to order tickets or subscriptions for the California Shakespeare Festival in the Bay Area are provided at this site.
FIRA de TEATRE
Founded by the theatre group Comediants in 1981, the Fira de Teatre is "a great spectacle of the scenic arts." The festival is held on the second week of September in the city of Tàrrega, Spain some 100 kilometers from Barcelona.
FRINGE FESTIVALS
Regional fringe festivals are found throughout the world, celebrating a 50-year tradition where live and innovative theatre is presented in an informal, accessible and inexpensive environment.
HUMANA FESTIVAL CALENDAR OF PERFORMANCES
Starting in 1976, the Humana Festival showcases new American works that often reach national and international acclaim.
KENNEDY CENTER AMERICAN COLLEGE THEATER FESTIVAL (KCACTF)
A nationwide theater program involving 18,000 college and university students that offers student artists individual recognition through awards and scholarships in playwriting, acting, criticism, directing, and design.
LONDON THEATRE ONLINE
This site provides links to West End Venues, Royal National Theatre listings and includes reviews and recommendations.
NATIONAL STUDENT DRAMA FESTIVAL (U.K.)
Held during Easter Week in Bristol, the festival was first started in 1956. Since the, it "has mirrored the evolution of British Theatre and its willingness to test the boundaries of theatrical expression."
PLAYBILL ONLINE
Provides a listing of shows by theater for Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional theater, summer stock and international locations with information about show times and buying tickets.
SHAKESPEARE FESTIVALS
List of national and some international Shakespeare Festivals provided by the Yahoo! Directory
STRATFORD FESITVAL
The web site for one of the major Shakespeare festivals in North America, based in the City of Stratford, Ontario.

FULL-TEXT PLAYS

ALEX: A Catalog of Electronic Texts on the Internet
Although this site is no longer being maintained, it is still a useful index to plays in electronic form available on the web. Works are usually those in the public domain (not covered by copyright) and include authors such as Shakespeare, Ibsen, Jonson and Euripides.
COMEDIA TEXTLIST
Electonic library of searchable and downloadable texts of more than two hundred comedias, autos sacramentales, and entremeses written in Spanish. Comedias are available in English translation
COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Site has offered full-text access to Shakerspeare's plays and poetry since 1993
ELECTRONIC TEXT CENTER, University of Virginia
Includes full text of works of literature publicly available, dating from AD 1500 to the present.

PERFORMING ARTS JOURNAL
Beginning with vol 19 (1997) Performing Arts Journal is available electronically.
PLAYBILL ONLINE
Playbill Online is more than an online magazine with articles about the New York theater scene. It also publishes job postings, listings of theater productions around the world, and allows you to order tickets online. Like most online magazines, only the latest issue is provided in full with an index of older issues.
