To Electronic Journals in Chemistry and Biochemistry (Publishers A-E)
This listing is for electronic journals of general interest in
chemistry. For journals related to other subject areas, see the
appropriate InfoSurf subject page, or try the InfoSurf
Electronic Journals page for alphabetical lists of free and UCSB-subscription journals..
- ChemConnect's List of
Chemistry Journals Online
If you don't see the journal you're looking for below, try this very
comprehensive list of chemistry and biochemistry-related electronic
journals, arranged by "complete journals", "journals with some limitations" and "Tables of Contents or abstracts online".. ChemConnect is a provider of Web services to the chemical industry and maintains a directory to chemical suppliers on the Internet (see also that section of this guide.)
- Internet Journal of Chemistry
This is a new, electronic -only refereed journal, specializing in articles on uses of the Internet in chemistry, and articles in any area of chemistry which can best be presented in the Web/multimedia format. Access is by subscription only, starting in 2000. UCSB has a subscription on order.
- Internet Journal of Vibrational Spectroscopy
A new electronic-only journal, available free of charge.
- Institute of Physics Journals
IOP, the leading British physics society publishes electronic versions of 33 journals, individually browsable, and searchable either individually or collectively. Full text is available to subsribers either as Adobe Acrobat PDF files or as compressed PostScript files. Lists of references are hyperlinked to the original article (if available electronically at IOP) and /or to the INSPEC abstract of the reference. References are in turn hyperlinked to all IOP electronic articles which cite them. UCSB has a current subscription to the IOP electronic journals. Below are listed some direct links to IOP journals of relevance to chemistry and related fields..
- International Union of Crystallography
- JASMS Online
This adjunct to the Journal of the American Society for Mass
Spectrometry provides indexing to the journal, and (for subscribers) "Fast Track Articles", which are fully peer-reviewed articles accepted for publication in JASMS that are posted electronically as pre-copyedited files within two weeks of acceptance.
- Journal of
Biological Chemistry: Internet Edition
The full text of JBC (Jan. 1995-present) is available by subscription only. UCSB currently provides
an online subscription to JBC accessible to ucsb.edu users only.
- Journal of Chemical Education Online +
The online version of J. Chem. Ed. contains full text and graphics in PDF format from the Sept. 1996 issue on. It also includes "JCE Internet" articles which are available only in electronic form.
Only individual print subscribers can subscribe to the Online edition, for an additional fee.
- Journal of Chemical
Physics Express
Manuscripts submitted by authors for distribution by JCP Express have been accepted for publication in the Journal of Chemical Physics and will be available prior to publication only. They may be copied electronically and printed for individual use only.
- Journal of Molecular Modeling: See Springer list below.
- Kluwer Online
Kluwer Academic Publishers has begun making their journals available online, and those of their subsidiary, Plenum Press. Browsable and searchable tables of contents are free to everyone, though the access to the full text (Adobe Acrobat PDF files) is restricted. UCSB users have full access from ucsb.edu addresses. Some journals which now have full text and are of possible relevance in chemistry and biochemistry are listed below.
- Nature
The Nature web site includes full text of articles for subscribers, and the Nature job listings.
- Neuroscience-Net
This electronic-only journal is free, but registration is requested.
- New Scientist
Includes job and career listings and selected articles from the current issue. Institutional access to the full text and archives is not yet available.
- Nonlinear Science Today
This is an adjunct to the print Journal of Nonlinear
Science, which covers subjects like chaos and turbulence over the
whole range of science.
- Oxford University Press Journals Online
Oxford University Press publishes journals in a wide range of subject areas. Most have tables of contents and abstracts are available free from 1996 to present. Full text is available free of charge to print subscribers from 1998-present, in HTML PDF or PostScript formats. Journals available to UCSB users of potential interest to chemists and biochemists include:
- Portland Press
Portland Press hosts online journals for several scientific societies. Among their journals of interest to chemists are:
- Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
PNAS is a weekly journal covering a wide range of sciences including chemistry and biochemistry. Browsable and searchable tables of contents are available free of charge, covering June 11, 1996 to present.. Full text, in either HTML or PDF format is available to subscribers only. The journal is available to all ucsb.edu users.
Archives of PNAS, currently covering 1980-1995, but eventually containing all issues from Volume 1, are being built at JSTOR.
- Royal Society of Chemistry Electronic Journals
The above link connects to the master RSC journal site, with links to each of the RSC and RSC-maintained electronic journals, which are browsable and searchable. You may search all the journals collectively by author, title word, abstract words, author addresses or full text. Searches may be limited to individual journals, or by year. Searching, browsing, and display of bibliographic information is free of charge. PDF files of the full text of articles (requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or higher) are available to subscribers only. Most journals are covered from October, 1997 to present; most now have Advance Articles -- articles which appear on the Web edition prior to print publication.
- The Royal Society (London)
The Royal Society is one of the oldest scientific societies and the oldest scientific journal publisher in existence. Its "Proceedings" and "Transactions" journals are still prestigious in all areas of science. The Royal Society is publishing its current issues online, and archives are being built at JSTOR which will eventually contain the entire runs from Volume 1.
- Science
Includes searchable and browsable full-text of articles October 1995-present and the current classified and display job advertisements, as well as several features unique to the web edition. Full text is available only to subscribers, including all ucsb.edu users.
Archives of Science, currently covering 1980-1989, but eventually extending back to Volume 1, are being built now at JSTOR.
-
The Scientist
The Scientist is a newspaper primarily aimed at life
scientists, but with much material of general interest, especially about
the interactions between science, academia, industry and government.
Includes job listings. Access is free, but registration is required.
- Springer LINK Electronic Journals
Springer LINK provides searchable (all journals together, or by subject groups) and browsable (by individual journal) access to a wide variety of scientific journals. Full text of articles (generally from 1996 onward, though it varies) is available as PDF files (requiring the Adobe Acrobat Reader). Direct links to individual journals in chemistry are given below. UCSB users have access to Springer LINK journals thanks to a UC wide contract with Springer.
- Taylor and Francis
Taylor and Francis publishes a wide array of scholarly journals, including some of interest to chemists and biochemists. Taylor and Francis allows electronic access to their journals through CatchWord, an Internet publishing specialist. UCSB has online access to those T-F journals now available online and to which we have an ongoing print subscription. Some titles of interest include:
- Wiley Interscience
Through the Interscience site, Wiley makes available browsable and searchable tables of contents of some of its journals from 1996-present, and full text in PDF format from 1997-present to subscribers only (accessible to anyone at a ucsb.edu address. Among the journals currently available of interest to chemists and biochemists are:
- World Scientific Publishing Co. Inc. Journals
World Scientific, a Singapore based publisher, publishes mainly conference proceedings, and journals in the areas of math and physics. However it does have a few journals of interest to chemists (mainly in materials and surface science), and is beginning to make them available on the Web in PDF format with browsable tables of contents, generally from 1998 to present. Some of their journals have begun offering electronic subscriptions; others will send electronic copies on e-mail request, while still others offer access free to all users for some journals. Such journals of interest to chemists include:
- Directory of
Scholarly and Professional E-Conferences: Chemistry
This directory gives a brief listing of listservs, newsgroups and
e-conferences in the chemical sciences. For other subject areas, or to
