Ableman, Michael.  Founder and director of the Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens. Works include: From the Good Earth: A Celebration of Growing Food Around the World (1993) [SEL SB175.A25 1993] and On Good Land: The Autobiography of an Urban Farm (1998) [SEL S605.5.A25 1998].

Ackert, Harriet Robbins (1934-    ).  Santa Barbara resident and author of the novels Prodigal Souls (SB: Fithian Press, 1998) [Spec, Printers Z478.86.F583 A2547 1998] and Cat Dance (2000).

Adams, Henry Mason (1907-1992).  UCSB professor and author of several works on German history and politics, including Prussian-American Relations, 1775-1871 (1960) [Main and Spec, Wyles E183.8.P83 A65], Propaganda, Prejudice, and the Breakdown of International Law (1964) [SRLF D619.A4], and Rebel Patriot: A Biography of Franz von Papen (SB: McNally & Loftin, 1987) [Main DD247.P3 A65 1987 and Spec, Printers Z478.86.K54 A33 1987].  See also: Santa Barbara News-Press, Mar. 15, 1964, A17.

Addis, Yda.  Santa Barbara resident, briefly married to Charles A. Storke in the early 1890s, and hired by Lewis Publishing Co. to write The Memorial and Biographical History of the Counties of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura (1891).  See also: Gilbar, Literary, 40, 167-169.

Agee, James (1909-1955).  Worked with John Huston on the screenplay for The African Queen (1951) [Main PN1997.A3116 1951] at San Ysidro Ranch in 1951.  While here, he suffered a heart attack and spent several weeks recuperating. Andree, Herb (1942-    ).  Author of Santa Barbara Architecture, From Spanish Colonial to Modern (SB: Capra Press, 1975) [Arts NA735.S42 A52, Spec F869.S45 A53, and Spec, Printers Z478.86.C36 A53 1980 and 1995].

*Ashmore, Harry S. (1916-1998).  Reporter, writer, editor with several newspapers, including executive editor of the Arkansas Gazette, Little Rock, 1948-1959; on leave as assistant to Stevenson for President campaign, 1955-1956.  Recipient, Pulitzer Prize, editorial writing, 1958, for his work on desegregation in Little Rock.  Editor-in-chief, Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1960-1963.  Author of a number of works on civil rights and race relations, including: The Negro and the Schools (1954) [Main and Black Studies LC2801.A7], An Epitaph for Dixie (1958) [Main F209.A8], The Other Side of Jordan (1960) [Main E185.61.A8], The Man in the Middle (1966) [Main E846.A8], Mass Communications (1966), with W. Atherton, Gertrude (1857-1948).  San Francisco novelist who traveled to Santa Barbara to meet the De la Guerra family, in preparation for her novel The Doomswoman (1895) [Spec PS1042 .D58 1895]. She later described this visit in her autobiography, Adventures of a Novelist (1932) [Main PS1043.A4 and Spec PS1043.A4 1932]. Atkins, Anita (1915-2000).  Pen name Sylvia Cranston. Wrote books on reincarnation and theosophy, spent the last several years of her life in Santa Barbara.
