The Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions Audio Archive Program 79: The Garner Case - I Harry Kalven, Jr., of the University of Chicago Law School, presides over a staff meeting at the Center focused on Garner v. Louisiana, in which the Supreme Court reversed the conviction of sit-in demonstrators for disturbing the peace. The case, Professor Kalven asserts, illustrates both the limitations and resources of the law in dealing with the civil rights movement. July 9, 1963. During that time it brought together many of the most capable and distinguished minds of the times to discuss vital issues facing American society of the day. Thanks to donors Neal Linson, Ceil Pulitzer, and Stanley Sheinbaum, a project has begun to digitize and make accessible on the web some of the most important conference proceedings, talks, and dialogues recorded by CSDI.
