In order to borrow materials, community members must obtain a UCSB Library Card. Library Cards may be purchased for $100 for one year. However, an optional UCSB Library Card ($25) is available for members of the UCSB Affiliates or Music Affiliates. Individuals may join the UCSB Affiliates and the Music Affiliates (both groups) for $50 or just one group for $40. Acceptable payment methods are by check or money order only.
Note: library cards for community members do NOT include access to licensed databases or Interlibrary Loan or the ability to check-out journals.
Current students and faculty from other UC campuses are also eligible for borrowing privileges at UCSB, subject to verification. A current government issued photo ID (ie, driver's license) is necessary.
Public school teachers are also eligible for borrowing privileges at UCSB. Bring a memo from your principal and a government issued photo ID.
Faculty from reciprocating libraries should check with their home library before coming to UCSB. In most cases the home library will issue a card to be presented to UCSB which can be used to identify eligibility.
Members of any UC Alumni Association are also eligible for a courtesy library card but without access to licensed databases or Interlibrary Loan or the ability to check-out journals. Bring your current alumni association card and a government issued photo ID to obtain a courtesy card with limited privileges.
To obtain a card or learn more, contact Circulation Services (893-3491) or see Circulation Services.
We are unable to offer Interlibrary Loan services to community members. If you wish to borrow an item not owned by the UCSB Libraries, contact your local library. Nearly all libraries provide Interlibrary Loan service, including the Santa Barbara Public Library.
Likewise, we are unable to loan UCSB materials via Interlibrary Loan to individuals. If you are distant from UCSB but wish to borrow something that we own, contact your local library and ask them to request the item on your behalf via Interlibrary loan. Lending Services for non-UCSB Libraries provides instructions for libraries on borrowing materials from UCSB.
Reference and research assistance is available to community members. For those from outside the local community, we generally are only able to provide information about the local area or our library holdings. For information, see Ask a Librarian.
Visitors and the public may use our computers to search our Library Catalogs, Pegasus (UCSB) and Melvyl (UC-wide), many of our databases, and to do research on the Internet. However, please note the following:
- Students, faculty, staff, and people doing research have priority for use of our computers. See our Public Access Computer Use Policy for more details.
- Some of our electronic resources are limited by license agreements to registered students, faculty, and staff of UCSB. None of them may be accessed from off-campus by community members. See Free Publicly-Accessible Databases on the Web for a partial list of various databases either free or available to Santa Barbara Public Library cardholders.
- There is no word processing, spreadsheet, or other such software available to the public in the library.
Members of the community may use our photocopy machines and print from computers for a fee. Printing from any of our computers requires purchase and use of a Copy Card. See this page for details.
For information on how you can donate materials or make gifts to the UCSB Libraries, see Support the UCSB Libraries.
