Library Privacy Policy
Your privacy while using the UCSB Libraries and their services is an important element of your intellectual and academic freedom. UCSB is supported in protecting your privacy by national and state-level laws as well as through University of California and campus policies.
While we do what we can to protect your privacy, please be aware that information or files transferred via the Internet or stored on Internet-accessible computers may be vulnerable. We urge you to use caution and follow accepted Internet safety guidelines. See the National Infrastructure Protection Center for basic tips, or the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse for more detailed information.
Personally-identifiable information
The Library’s privacy policy prohibits releasing personal information about any user of library services, in person or online, including patron activity (books checked out, fines, etc.), to other individuals or organizations, unless authorized by the cardholder. This information is never revealed to any third party except by a warrant, court order, or subpoena authorized by national, state or local law. All access to and use of personal information is restricted to performing library business.
Links to other sites
Infosurf and Pegasus link to other sites and services that are not controlled by the UCSB Library. Where UCSB and/or CDL (California Digital Library) have licenses with vendors for digital information resources, every attempt is made to include user information protection in the license agreement. When linked to another site, you are subject to the privacy policy of the new site - please review the privacy statements and policies at these external sites.
Site Security
To guard against unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and promote the correct use of information, we have implemented physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.
While we consider these measures reasonable, no guarantee can be given that they will always protect against invalid access or improper activity. For this reason, we avoid keeping information beyond the term of its primary use, and where possible encrypt or delete data elements that might cause activities to be linked to individual users.
Cookies
A "cookie" is information stored on your workstation by a web server and used to customize your web service in some way.
UCSB Library webservers do not use cookie technology and do not place cookies on the workstations of our users.
Some databases use temporary cookies; the UCSB Libraries, however, do not retain these cookies.
Online or Email Reference
The information we collect via our ASK email or online chat reference services is kept in the strictest confidence and helps us provide and improve these services. All access to and use of personal information is restricted to performing library business. While answering your question, we may refer you to web sites that are not maintained by the UCSB Library. When linked to another site, you are subject to the privacy policy of the new site - which may differ from the UCSB Library policy.
