UCSB Libraries Public Access Computer Use PolicyWhile access is available to the general public, priority use is given to students, faculty and staff. When there is high demand for using computers, time limits may be enforced; access to non-university users may be restricted; those not engaged in research or course-related activities may be asked to relinquish their computer to those needing use for research purposes. As the Library is an official depository for Federal and California government information, the public is welcome to use library computers to access electronic information from the United States Government and California Government websites, subject to the same restrictions as UCSB students, faculty and staff. All use of public workstations is expected to be in compliance with state and federal laws and university policies. Computers may not be used for commercial use for personal profit, unauthorized access to systems and accounts, unauthorized or illegal uploading or downloading of software, violation of copyright, violation of campus conduct, harassment, and civil rights policies, or tampering with public computer workstations or printers. The Library may deny access to those violating this policy, and violators may be subject to appropriate legal action. The Library upholds free and open access to information in support of freedom of inquiry and academic freedom. Because the Internet is an unregulated global information network, content and validity of information cannot be verified. Information viewed by one user may be considered objectionable to another library user. The Library's primary users are adults; parents are responsible for monitoring Internet access for their children. All should respect privacy and diversity, and be considerate about viewing material that could be considered offensive to other users.
