Sociology Collection Development Policy
I. PURPOSE OF THE COLLECTION
- The UCSB Library collects, manages, and provides access
to the collection of literature in the sociological
disciplines to support the research and curricular
programs of the Sociology Department. The primary
clientele are the graduate students, faculty,
undergraduate students, and staff of the Sociology
Department. The Sociology department offers bachelor, master,
and doctorate degrees. In addition, other UCSB students, faculty,
and staff as well as community members use this collection of
research materials. Much of the collection activity for the
advanced degree programs is at the research level when possible.
In general, the collection activity for the undergraduate programs
is at the research/study level.
Areas of concentration and collection include: crime, criminal
justice, and correction; culture, conversation analysis, and
communication; deviance and social control; diversity; economy,
society, and demography; evaluation research; gay, lesbian, and
bisexuality; group analysis; humanistic sociology; labor markets;
life course, socialization, and interpersonal relations; marriage
and the family; mass communication and public opinion; media
studies; methodologies, statistical analysis, and computer
application; modernization and community development; political
sociology; social and personal change; social inequities and
gender roles; social movements; social organization and change;
stratification, inequality, and ethnicity; social psychology;
sociological theory; sociology of education, law, religion and
work; urban sociology; and welfare.
Additional interdisciplinary emphases available in the doctoral program include:
human development program; language, interaction, and social organization
emphasis; and women's studies emphasis, in collaboration with
faculty from other departments.
II. SCOPE OF COVERAGE
- A. Languages.
- Primarily English language publications
with some French, Spanish, German, and Italian as necessary.
- B. Chronological limits.
- Primarily modern history coverage with emphasis on twentieth century.
- C. Date of publication.
- Primarily recent publications dates, although older publication dates when
appropriate.
- D. Geographical areas.
- Primarily covers world areas with
emphasis on the United States and other geographic areas whose primary language is
English.
- E. Place of publication.
- Primarily acquires publications
from throughout the world with emphasis on publishers
from the United States and other areas whose primary
language is English.
- F. Type of publishers.
- Primarily acquires publications
from scholarly, research, and university presses and
also specialized sociological and feminist and gay
and lesbian publishers.
III. TYPES OF MATERIALS

Most materials acquired and/or subscribed to are
primarily in the form of monographs and serials. In
addition, Government Publications including the U. S.
and California state governments are used extensively
and are acquired and/or subscribed to by the Government
Publications Department. Computerized data bases are
used via online terminals and cd-roms as appropriate.
Antiquarian materials, manuscripts, and audiovisual
materials are not generally purchased.
IV. INTERDISCIPLINARY RELATIONS

Sociology is probably one of the most interdisciplinary
fields in the social and behavioral sciences. It relates
directly to anthropology, Asian American studies, Black
studies, biological sciences, Chicano studies, economics,
education, gay and lesbian studies, history, political
science, psychology, urban studies, and women's studies.

acquisition program). Participates in the UC-
Stanford University shared collections program.

Loan program.
