Collection Development Policy

Purpose of the Collection

The purpose of the Military Science collection is to support a general Military Science (ROTC) curriculum which conforms to the academic patterns of the Santa Barbara Campus of the University of California. The program in Military Science includes both lower and upper division courses. Selection focuses on basic materials for Military Science and Officer Training and items identified for advanced instruction.

II. Scope of Coverage

There is considerable interaction with other disciplines and collection managers for maintenance and expansion of the Military Science collection. In the areas of Engineering and Sciences, collaborative collection development among the disciplines allows for expansion of the collection for those subjects. In the area of peace and conflict, collaboration with the collection managers for History, Political Science and Law help maintain the collection.

The Military Science collection does not focus upon individual regimental histories except in the case of the American Civil War. The Wyles collection, a part of the Special Collections department in the Davidson Library, collects in this area and the Nineteenth Century North American Westward Expansion. As the Reserve Officer Training Program is affiliated with the Army, that is more the focus of collecting, rather than in the area of Naval or Air Sciences.
