Linguistics Collection Development Policy
PURPOSE OF THE COLLECTION
To support the scholarship of the faculty and students of the UCSB Linguistics Department.
The department offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctorate program that covers all the core areas of linguistics.
Faculty and graduate students also specialize in different language areas, especially in English, Native American and
Asian languages. The collection also supports the research and study of faculty and students from other departments in the
Humanities and Social Sciences.
SCOPE OF COVERAGE
Subject Areas: Phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, anthropological linguistics, social linguistics, child acquisition, computational linguistics, language universals, linguistic theory, foreign language, and area studies.
Language: Materials collected are primarily in English or English translation. Works written in other languages also have high priority and are acquired depending on the availability of the items and research needs of the faculty members.
Chronological limits: There are no chronological limits
applicable for this collection.
Date of publication: Most materials selected for acquisition
are published in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Geographical areas: This collection has no geographical limits. A predominate amount of the materials acquired, however, are from the United States and Europe.
TYPES OF MATERIALS
Inclusions
Materials are collected with an emphasis on research monographs and academic journals. North American university press titles are received on approval, and other materials are selected individually. Subscriptions to journals are entered and maintained in consultation with faculty.
Hard copy (paper) publications of monographs are emphasized with an occasional electronic book. Journal access may be print or electronic. To maximize limited resources, most journals will NOT be available in more than one format; in general, electronic versions are preferred, so long as they have reliable and perpetual access.
Formats Materials are collected in all formats. Electronic materials are acquired, particularly electronic journals.
Exclusions Reprints are generally not acquired unless
augmented, revised, or containing some other new intellectual material.
Textbooks are not actively selected.
OTHER RESOURCESStudents, faculty and staff of UCSB have access to
Interlibrary Loan services for obtaining materials from other campuses. For some
acquisitions, other UC campus linguistics information specialists
are consulted for shared collection development decisions.
