Collection Development Policy

PURPOSE OF COLLECTION

The purpose of the collection activity is to support faculty research and undergraduate instruction for the Exercise and Sport Studies Program in the Division of Social Sciences, College of Letters and Science. The department offers a program of basic instruction and an Exercise and Sport Studies minor with emphasis on sport management, exercise and health science, athletic coaching, and fitness instruction.

SCOPE OF COVERAGE

Emphasis is on current material. Coverage spans a number of disciplines including, but not limited to, intercollegiate sports, anatomy and physiology, psychology, sociology, health and nutrition, business management, officiating, injury prevention and more. English is the primary language.

TYPES OF MATERIAL

Materials acquired are in print and electronic format. Electronic resources with full text and easy access are preferred. Reference works such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and handbooks are also acquired. Specific monographs supplied by faculty are generally held as reference materials and access is through the reserve book services.

Generally hard copy is acquired for monographs unless the material is available in another format. To maximize limited resources, journals and indexes and abstracts are acquired in electronic format only.

OTHER RESOURCES

Resources not owned by the UCSB libraries are generally available through interlibrary loan from other UC libraries. Interlibrary loan is used heavily. Many requests for older materials are satisfied through the interlibrary loan process, however, if the demand is of a continuing nature the material is considered for acquisition.
