Dance Collection Development Policy
Overview
The Dance Collection Development Policy supports research, study and teaching
of dance faculty and students in the Dance Division of the Department of Dramatic
Art at UCSB.
Through the acquisition of material on the history of dance and the techniques
of dance, the Library supports faculty and students in the two degree programs:
the B.A. in Dance which provides preparation for careers in dance such as therapy
(dance and psychology), arts management (dance and business), and historical
research (dance and history); and the B.F.A. degree in dance prepares students
for a professional career in performance and/or choreography through intensive
study in both studio; performance and dance research.
Materials collected further support research, scholarship, and study in choreography,
dance history, and dance production by dance and dramatic art faculty, undergraduate
and graduate students. Materials collected as well provide documentation
for creative, historical, production and technical aspects of dance presentations
and theatrical productions.
Although the primary mission of the dance collection is to support the programs
of the Division of Dance & related areas in Dramatic Art, the collection
also supports instruction and research relating to dance in the College of Creative
Studies, in other humanities, in the social sciences (particularly in area,
ethnic & gender studies) and in other departments and units throughout the
university. In addition, the collection is frequently used by performers, teachers,
researchers, & other campus visitors with an interest in the performing
arts.

Formats
Dance researchers, scholars and performers use a wide array of materials in many
types: print, visual, audio-visual, audio and electronic. The collection contains
formats that best meet the varying needs of performance, production and historical
studies. Predominant formats currently represented include:
- Monographs & monographic series in print from university,
professional, popular (trade) and small presses;
- Videos, VHS & DVD, including documentaries, creative
works and commercial releases. These formats are widely used in the dance
program;
- Journals and magazines of the academic, popular,
professional & research serial literature;
- Electronic resources (journals, monographs, indexes,
abstracts, & text databases), are acquired as funding allows. Relevant electronic
resources are acquired in collaboration with other collections; with the Humanities
Interdisciplinary collection and/or in collaboration or as a result of consortial
agreements with the UC Performing Arts and related consortiums, campuses through
the California Digital Library or in collaboration with other librarians.
- Other Resources:  Interlibrary loan for material
held in circulating collections in the UC system is available for current
faculty, academics, staff & students. Interlibrary loan beyond the UC system
is available to UCSB current faculty, academics, staff and graduate students.
Archival collections with collection strengths in areas of dance such as choreography,
dance music, or dance in art, including UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, UCLA, California
State University (Chico) & the Getty Research Institute, can be accessed via
the Online Archive of California
(OAC).
- Consortia and Cooperative Agreements: When possible, consortia
and cooperative agreements are used to augment collections, primarily through
the California Digital Library & the dance librarian's participation in
the Performing Arts Consortia. UCSB actively works with other University of
California campuses to pool resources, negotiate purchases, and share materials.
Research in dance is enhanced by numerous UC CDL-supported databases
- Faculty & student recommendations:   As the
collection primarily serves faculty research, curriculum development & performance
needs, as well as student research, study, & performance needs, frequent &
active interaction and collaboration between students, faculty and the dance
collection manager (librarian) contributes to develop the collection to best
meet the library needs of its principal audience.
