Assignment of Library Research Carrels

The Library assigns research carrels to UCSB faculty and currently enrolled advanced to candidacy doctoral students on a first come basis. In order to assure equitable access, the following principles must be considered:

A. Purpose: Library studies are assigned for research needs and are not to be used as offices or conference/meeting sites.

B. Eligibility: Only UCSB ladder ranking faculty (Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor) and currently enrolled advanced to candidacy doctoral students are eligible for assignment. (For doctoral candidates, an advancement-to-candidacy-fee receipt from the UCSB Billing/Cashier’s Office must be supplied to confirm eligibility.) The carrel is solely for the use of the assigned individual and may not be secondarily reassigned to ineligible persons.

C. Duration: The initial assignment is for one year.

D. Renewing: Carrels may be renewed subject to conditions described in section “E. Waiting List” below. Carrel keys are checked out on the Library system in the same manner as other library materials. Similarly, carrel keys must be renewed on the Library system either through the carrel key holder’s library account or by direct request to the Circulation Department.

E. Waiting List: When there is a waiting list, faculty have priority over doctoral candidates for a carrel assignment. Doctoral candidates who have been assigned a carrel the longest will be asked to vacate, unless already sharing. The person vacating may reapply by placing his/her name on the waiting list.

F. Leaves of Absence: A faculty member on leave during an assignment may continue to occupy the carrel if he or she remains in the area; faculty on leave to other universities or who have gone abroad relinquish their carrels for the duration of their absence. Currently enrolled doctoral candidates that are conducting research away from the Santa Barbara area and are not actively using their carrel for more than a quarter must vacate the carrel and surrender its key.

G. Sharing of Carrels: Two persons may be assigned to the same research carrel by mutual agreement.

H. Uncharged Library Materials: All library material left in the carrel must be checked out. Library staff will check each carrel monthly and materials not charged out will be returned to Library shelves.

I. Responsibility: Occupants are responsible for the security of Library materials held in the carrel and for the keys. If keys are lost or stolen, the occupant will be charged for changing the carrel’s lock. The Library assumes no responsibility for personal property in research carrels.

J. Carrel door windows: In order to prevent unauthorized intrusion, to assure that the carrel is unoccupied when closing the building, and to verify that the carrel is unoccupied during evacuations, carrel door windows must not be blocked. Materials blocking the windows will be removed by Library personnel.

K. Appeal: Persons asked to relinquish research carrels may appeal to the Library Administration.
