Graduate Student Services

The University Library provides a variety of collections and services to meet the needs of graduate students. Many resources and services are available from the UCSB Library’s website: www.library.ucsb.edu

The following is selected information about the Library to help graduate students get started on their research.

Arts & Music Collections
Located in the Music Building, the Arts Library provides collections and services in the fine arts and music, including music scores and sound recordings, videotape and listening facilities and an extensive collection of art exhibition catalogs. In addition to the collections, graduate students will find an array of services designed to aid them in their research and course work. Collection Specialists
The UCSB Library has many collection specialists who select books, journals, and other materials for the library collections in over 60 academic disciplines. Acquisitions recommendations are always welcome and may be sent directly to the appropriate collection specialist. Copying and Printing
Copying or printing is 10 cents per page and is a self-service process. Copy machines are on most floors of the Libraries and will take either coins or debit (copy) cards. Copy cards cost $1 and are available from vending machines on the 1st floor near the Reference/Information Desk, and on the 2nd floor near the Science & Engineering Reference Desk. Microform readers and printers are available in the Government Information Center on the 1st floor of Davidson Library; printing from these cost 25 cents per page, or bring in a formatted CD-ROM or a USB drive to download copies without charge. Scanners are available here.

Cubicles
A limited number of cubicles are available to doctoral students who have advanced to candidacy. To apply for a cubicle, contact Claudia Jimenez: jimenez@library.ucsb.edu

Exam Cram Space for you and your students
During the last 3 weeks of fall, winter and spring quarters, the Library’s small computer classroom (seats 12-24) is available to instructors and TAs for exam review sessions. For reservation form and additional information, see: www.library.ucsb.edu/forms/examcram/mail_form.html

Graduate Study Lounges
There are two quiet study lounges restricted to graduate students: one on the 2nd floor and one on the 8th. The rooms have wireless access, reading lamps, electrical outlets for laptops, and comfortable seating. To use the rooms, present your UCSB graduate library card to the Circulation Desk and check out a key. There are also two small study rooms for individual or small group use (2-3 people) on a day-by- day reservation basis; inquire at the Circulation Desk.

Hours
During the regular quarter, Davidson Library is open from 8 am to midnight, Monday through Thursday; Friday 8 am to 9 pm; Saturday 9 am to 9 pm; and 10 am to midnight on Sunday. Humanities and Social Sciences Research
Librarians at the Reference/Information Desk on the first floor of Davidson Library provide research assistance to graduate students in the humanities and social sciences, and are available for specialized reference and instruction services. Information & Research Services
Stop at one of our Reference/Information desks to speak with a librarian or make an appointment with a subject specialist. Services available to graduate students include library orientations, subject- specialized consultations, training in library use for teaching assistants so they may introduce their students to library resources, in-depth assistance in using databases and other research tools, and related services. Instruction
Library tours, orientations and research instruction can be arranged for classes in all disciplines. To request a library session, please use this form or contact the librarian specialist in your subject: www.library.ucsb.edu/internal/collman/colspec.html

Interlibrary Loan
Graduate students may borrow books, journal articles and other materials from other research libraries worldwide. ILL will request materials from all libraries willing to lend, including the Library of Congress and other major research institutions. Presentations Practice Space
Graduate students may reserve the Library’s small computer classroom (seats 12-24) to practice giving presentations (mock job talks, conference presentations, or thesis proposal defenses). Requests are accepted no more than 1 week in advance, on a first-requested, first-served basis. Requests are not available during the last 3 weeks of the quarter. Remote Access to Electronic Resources
The UCSB Library provides online access to a number of commercial and private resources, including article databases, electronic journals, and electronic books. Research Consultations
Graduate students who are beginning their research on a paper, thesis, or dissertation may consult a librarian with corresponding subject expertise, who can provide advice about appropriate resources. To make an appointment with a librarian for a consultation, contact the subject specialist from the list at: www.library.ucsb.edu/internal/collman/colspec.html

Science Research
The Sciences-Engineering Library (SEL) is located on the second floor, north wing of Davidson Library. Librarians at the SEL Desk provide research assistance to graduate students in science and engineering, and are available for specialized reference and instruction services. Services for UCSB Library Users with Disabilities
