When Do I Need to Use the Proxy Server?
You need the proxy server ...
- if you want to access research databases or e-journals and you are not connected to the campus network
- Hint: If the resource you want to use is listed on the UCSB Library's InfoSurf Web site as "UCSB only", then you will need the proxy server to access it from off campus.
You do not need the proxy server ...
- if you only want to use Pegasus or Melvyl
- if you are using a computer connected to the campus network
- in the library
- in an office or lab on campus
- connected to the Internet via an on-campus wireless network
- connected to ResNet in on-campus housing
Why Do I Need to Use the Proxy Server?
You need the proxy server ...
- because the resources available through are library subscriptions are superior to anything you can get free on the Internet
- because access to our online subscriptions are validated by the IP address of your computer
- because the proxy server gives you an on-campus IP address while you are connected
Proxy server use is available only to UCSB faculty, staff, and current students.
If you are not eligible for proxy use, you will need to use one of the public computers in the library to access our subscriptions. Our license agreements require us to limit off-campus access to UCSB-affiliated users (students, faculty, staff, etc.).
