Introduction
Any cartobibliography that is not limited by time
frame is never truly completed, and this one is no exception.
I began work on in it in 1984 or thereabouts, when I was the Map
Librarian at the Arthur Lakes Library, Colorado School of Mines,
Golden, and where about 90 percent of the reference questions
I answered were on geologic maps. I have been working on it off
and on ever since - most recently with the assistance of two research
grants from the Librarians Association of the University of California
- and have finally reached the point where I realize I've done
what I can, given the time I have available, and the fact that
the collection with which I work now has relatively few geologic
maps. Even with all that time and effort, there are still many
question marks throughout the index.
I am therefore issuing this on the Web, for scholarly
and research purposes. I would be most happy to receive any additions
and corrections; I would especially be interested in receiving
Web-site addresses of specific maps that are listed in the cartobibliography.
UNITED STATES
NOTE: In 1996, the National Geologic Map Database came up at:
http://wwwflag.wr.usgs.gov/ngmdb/
It is planned that it will include a catalog of bibliographic
records, digital maps and data, a description of current mapping
projects, and a list of recently published earth-science maps
and data.
I. Maps - overall

United States, exclusive of Alaska and Hawaii. Washington. 1:2,500,000.
2 sheets.
King, Philip Burke; and Beikman, H. M. 1974. Geologic map of the United States (exclusive of Alaska and Hawaii). Reston VA : U.S. Geological Survey 1:2,500,000. 2 sheets + legend sheet. Text is Professional paper 901.
- digital version:
Scruben, Paul G.; Arndt, Raymond E.; and Bawiec,
Walter J. 1994. Geology of the conterminous United States at
1:2,500,000 scale - a digital representation of the 1974 P.B.

PetroImage Corporation. 1982. Geologic and Landsat
map index, scale 1:250,000. Golden CO. Scale not given.
II. Maps - series
American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Geological
Highway Map Committee. 1966- . United States geological highway
map series. Tulsa. 1:1,875,000. 12 sheets.
Geological Society of America. 1959- . Map and
chart series, MC. Washington; Boulder CO.
GJQ. 1979- . Grand Junction CO: U.S. Department of Energy, Grand Junction Office.
- mapping mainly at 1:250,000 scale; tied into NURE
program
United States. Geological Survey. 1894-1945. Geologic atlas of the United States. Washington. Scales differ.
- folios up to 227; series replaced by Geologic
quadrangle map, GQ
____. 19 - . Geologic map index of [state]. Washington; Reston. Scales differ.
Maps indexed in this series must satisfy the following criteria:
1. Map must be published; no theses, dissertations, State-agency open-file reports, or unpublished maps are indexed. USGS Open-File Reports are indexed.
2. Map must show geologic units and explain them in terms of lithology and stratigraphy.
3. Map must be more detailed than the primary State geologic maps, which are usually are 1:250,000 or 1:500,000 scale.
4. Map must be an original compilation, not a generalized version or re-use of a previously published map.
5. Map must have scale and good geographic control (such as latitude and lognitude, township and range lines, good base map, or index map showing precise outline of area mapped).

NOTE: An important scale for U.S. mapping is 1:250,000.
Several states - e.g., California; Idaho; Minnesota - have adopted
it for the state-geologic-atlas scale. USGS has done considerable
mapping at this scale, as did the NURE program. Below are listed,
by 1:250,000-scale quadrangle name, the relevant series number.
