Introduction

Any cartobibliography that is not limited by time frame is never truly completed, and this one is no exception. I began work on in it in 1984 or thereabouts, when I was the Map Librarian at the Arthur Lakes Library, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, and where about 90 percent of the reference questions I answered were on geologic maps. I have been working on it off and on ever since - most recently with the assistance of two research grants from the Librarians Association of the University of California - and have finally reached the point where I realize I've done what I can, given the time I have available, and the fact that the collection with which I work now has relatively few geologic maps. Even with all that time and effort, there are still many question marks throughout the index.

I am therefore issuing this on the Web, for scholarly and research purposes. I would be most happy to receive any additions and corrections; I would especially be interested in receiving Web-site addresses of specific maps that are listed in the cartobibliography.

--from 1933 to 19 (v. 33), titled Bibliography and index of geology exclusive of North America; North America was then indexed by Bibliography of North American geology (published by the U.S. Geological Survey, Washington, D.C.), and the List of geological literature added to the Geological Society's library during the year ..., published by the Geological Society of London, had a section for "maps, geological." The indexing of maps in this bibliography is inclined to change, or ws in the past; the user is advised to be cautious and to look under "geological maps" or "maps" under regional headings, or under "engineering geology." "Cartography" and "geological exploration" may also lead to map cites. The data base may be searched online, including coordinate searching.
