BIBLIOGRAPHY
Bibliography is the geography of the book world.
Pierce Butler
The bibliography that follows lists those works
which the author found to be most valuable to the study of topographic
mapping. Each item in this bibliography has been cited in the
text in the appropriate discussion(s).
Several basic bibliographical tools were invaluable
in assembling this bibliography. The Bibliography of Cartography,
maintained by the Geography and Map Division of the Library of
Congress and reproduced in book form in 1973 by G.K. Hall, with
two-volume 1980 supplement, covers the pre-1980 time period very
well. Bibliographica cartographica (and its predecessor Biblioteca
cartographica, 1957-1973), "Section VIII: Topographic and
Landscape Cartography" or (currently) "Section H, Topographic
Cartography," 1974-1990, is another basic source, as is Geo-Abstracts
(1970-1978), especially "Section G: Remote Sensing and Cartography"
(1974-1982). Reader's Guide (1900-1909; 1951-1924), Reader's
Guide Supplement (1907-1910), and Poole (1897-1906) were also
searched.
Many periodicals have been included in this bibliography.
The authority used to verify periodical names is:
Harris, Chauncy D.; and Fellman, Jerome D. 1980.
International list of geographic series. 3rd ed.
Chicago: Department of Geography, University
of Chicago.
The bibliography uses the type of entry that libraries
are most likely to use; this refers both to form of entry of a
corporate-body name (pre-AACRII rules are used), and to capitalization
(e.g., French non-proper nouns are not capitalized). When publisher
is the same as author, no publisher is given; "s.n."
(sine nomine)for publisher means that the publisher is not known.
One major exception to library form of entry is that for ease
of citation, United Nations conferences are given with the author
as being "United Nations," not as the full name of the
conference.
The forms followed in this bibliography is as follows:
Book
Author's last name, Author's first name. date. Title.
Place: Publisher. (Series author. Series title and
number)
Chapter or section of a book
Author's last name, Author's first name. date.
"Title." pp. ____ in:
Author's last name, Author's first name (if
different from section's author). Title.
Place: Publisher.
Periodical article or symposium/conference article
a) journal title - no author given:
"Title of article." date. Journal
title vol.: pp.
b) journal title - author given:
author's last name, Author's first name. date.
"Title." Journal author (if any). Journal
title vol.:pp.
Month is given only if the volume or year of a periodical
does not use consecutive numbering for all pages in a year, and
thus the issue number or the month is required to find the article.
A mention of the idiosyncrasies of this bibliography
may be helpful. Acronyms are placed at the beginning of letter
groupings. When any element in an entry is in doubt, this is
indicated by a parenthetical question mark. Cross referencing
has been kept to a minimum, but there are a few - for example,
at the abbreviation "UN", the reader is directed to
"United Nations."
When reference to the bibliography entries is
made in the text, an abbreviated citation has been used - in most
cases only the first one or two words of the full citation. Enough
of the full citation has been given that the reader can easily
locate the entry and avoid confusing it with similar entries.
Names beginning with "de" - for example,
de Matos - can be found alphabetized by the first word following
the "de" - in the case of de Matos, under "M."
It is all too easy for errors to creep into a bilbiography. The author would appreciate notification of errors discovered.
